Unhappy Astro Ventilation System 68 Camaro

I have a 68 Camaro Coupe that caught on Fire while driving, pretty much melted every thing from the Firewall into the Trunk. The Car is being rebuilt at this time, with the Body Work finished, and the Camaro will be painted in the near future. Then on to rebuilding the Interior, All the Astro Ventilation System has been melted, and EVERY THING needs to be replaced, problem is, I don't know all the parts needed, and where to purchase them! Every thing I see advertised on Ebay Mtrs pertaining to the Astro Ventilation shows very few parts, I have not once seen all the parts needed offered. One Company shows the Balls and retainers plus the weather stripping offered and calls it a Kit, which sells for $130.00. I do know there is duct work, etc needed.............Can some one fill me in on ALL the parts needed, and tell me where to purchase the items..................ALSO I highly suggest to any one who cares about their Ride, to invest in a Fire Extinguisher, and mount it in the Cabin, not in the Trunk, where there will be easy access to it, when needed, may not only help save your ride, but also could save you and your family, friends, etc.........

Can't offer any help on the other issues, but I keep an extinguisher in the back seat at all time. Sound advice!

Max sorry to hear about your car. You may want to check with Heart Beat City (586-226-8811) the owner has lots of Gen one Camaros and knows a ton about these cars. He also might have the rare and hard to find parts you are looking for. Best of luck with the restoration of your ride.

Re: Astro Ventilation System 68 Camaro

Restore-z28, Thanks for your response, it is appreciated greatly! I did contact Heartbeat City, and some one sent me an email, stating they do not know where to get all the Astro Ventilation Parts needed. On Ebay Motors, they offer a Kit, but the picture only shows the Two Balls and looks like weather stripping for $130.00, which I am sure there are alot more items needed to put it back to the way it came from the Factory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would bet some one in Team Camaro knows all the parts needed, and where to purchase them, just have to hope that person reads this, or perhaps knows of some one who can point me in the right direction. There has too be other First Generation Camaro people that have been in this same boat, as far as buying a Camaro, and some or all of these parts are missing, and unable to find the source that indeed does sell the parts needed...........About the Fire Extinguisher, since the 68 Camaro Fire, all Five of my vehicles have now got Fire Extinguishers in them. I never see Rick's, Eckler's, Classic Industries in their Catalogs, etc high light the importance of having one or more Fire Extinguishers not only in their Classic Vehicles, but in their Daily Driver as well. Don't wait until one is needed, and not have one, the Car is gone, and there is nothing you can do, but stand and watch it burn up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also for your info, Barret-Jackson Classic Car Auction will be at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, NV Sept 23-24-25, 2010 and will be televised on Speed Channel, I believe starting Sept 23rd at 4PM, I assume that is Pacific Time, but check your listings if you would like to watch it............

Re: Astro Ventilation System 68 Camaro

There is not much to the Astro Vent system. Unfortunately its not shown in the 1968 assembly manual and my current 68 is an AC car so i cant double check for you, but going from memory here is what you need:

R566 astro vent kit
K289 right shut off elbow
K290 left shut off elbow
KW564 knobs and ferrules
G8829 4"ID x 72" long hose

Those numbers are out of the Classic Industries catalog

Everyone who works on their Camaro should have an AIM.
Unfortunately the Astro vent is not shown in the AIM. Actually the pictures in the 68 AIM show a 67 dash without astro or AC vents.
Its also not in the chassis service manual, probably because it doesn't need service. Its just a hose going to a chrome ball with a manual shut off flap, all available new reproduction. It's really that simple.

Max, I hope you where able to get the parts you need from the ad in the classifieds. From your description of the fire "everything melted", I think you need more than just astro vent parts. There are plastic heater and defroster ducts that are not connected to the astro vent system that probably melted as well.

After viewing the parts for sale in classifieds, I realized the hose listed in my previous post is not for astro vents, they are for AC vents. The astro vent hoses are not reproduced as far as I know.
They are shown in this picture:

The heater/defroster ducts are shown here:

The two plastic things with the accordion ends are not repro'd. I got some used somewhere but that's about it. I think most of the rest is repro'd.

1968 Z28 British Green, all original except CE 302 engine. Have original owners booklet and protect-o-plate.

I just found the astro vent page in my AIM, it was way out of order in the 3-ring binder. It takes a little practice to find things in there!
