Question Is there an A/C kit like this available?

A friend of mine has a 71 camaro small block with factory air. However almost all of the components under the hood are gone. Brackets, condensor, compressor, hoses all gone. The evaporator housing is there and all the factory controls are there.

So he wants me to see if I can find an A/C kit that has everything he needs. He wants it to look original since he has a factory air car. Anyone make something like this?

You might cruise the aftermarket people, especially the ones sponsoring here, for individual parts, or a kit, maybe. Other than those, it's the salvage yards and swap meets, yard sales, etc.

Maybe a member here has some items you need. Good luck.

Yea, just trying to avoid buying it a piece at a time. He would rather find a kit and be done with it. I'll check out the sponsors.

Classic Auto Air has a kit that updates the underhood items (lines, hoses, compressor, condenser, etc.) to modern components.

I converted my '67 Camaro with their kit and went to R-134a with no trouble. My Camaro still uses it's factory controls and suitcase.

Couldn't be happier.

Re: Is there an A/C kit like this available?

We sell and install both Vintage Air and Classic Auto Air Sure fit systems made specifically for your car that replaces about everything. Depending on the brand it works through a stock controller and the Vintage Air Gen IV includes a new controller that looks stock and bolts into the factory location. The systems both blow through the factory vents, but they not look original as the big suitcase on the firewall under the hood is eliminated with both kits. But eliminating the suitcase is a huge bonus unless this is a super rare car with a 1000 point show restoration.

Were it me, I would put a Vintage Air Gen IV in it. But if the car is super stock and rare and you must keep it stock, most of the stuff from any second gen will fit as far as original A/C components go. By the late 70s, A/C was more common then not in those cars so it should b not be to hard to find. There are some minor differences from year to year, Classic Auto Air could probably advise on each little difference. And as mahunt mentioned, Classic Auto air can rebuild all the original stuff.

You will have more money invested in the restored original system then the superior aftermarket A/C, but it will be original

Here is some info on the Vintage Air Gen IV system for you

Yes Classic Auto Air has a complete "Underhood" kit with new parallel flow bolt-in condenser, Sanden compressor, bracketry, etc. that connects to the OE system, uses R134a and cools as it should with the superior condenser.
