Wrong Heater Core

Heater core went in my 68 camaro. When I ordered the new one I ordered a core for a 396 because I thought I had the front cover for a big block car. Turns out it isn't. Any one know how to modify what I have or should I just send it back and order the right core? It will probably cost me extra shipping to send it back to Summit, and re-ship.

Thanks for any helpany one can offer. Yoddy

Re: Wrong Heater Core

So it's a small block cover on the firewall?
You can get heater cores over the counter at the parts stores. No need to pay shipping.
Either buy a big block core cover or put a small block core in it.

Re: Wrong Heater Core

I could get get it over the counter here but it was twice the price in Canada as in the US. andf our dollar is good now. Now by the time I send this back and re-order Icould have got it here. I'm not droping a fender to change the front cover.

thanks yoddy

Re: Wrong Heater Core

You can modify your small block cover to use a big block core. Much cleaner hose routing that way. Search for it and you'll find things like this... https://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=102938 You don't even have to remove the cover, it just makes it easier.

Re: Wrong Heater Core

I just went through this and couldn't find a small block core that would install w/o removing the firewall cover on the engine side so I converted it to a big block core and just got the cover plate for the firewall side box. All the small block cores I got had a lower tube that was 1.5" longer than the one I took out making it impossible to get the tubes through the firewall w/o removing the engine side box which I wasn't going to do. Just an FYI to watch what you get for a core, maybe you'll have better luck but I gutted it under the dash to try and get as much angle on the inner box with the core and it just wasn't going. The only thing that might have worked woudl be to put the core in loose and then slip the box over, but then it wouldn't have a retainer clip.

For what it's worth I tried cores from ground-up, year one, summit racing, and several auto parts stores.
