Unhappy HELP COOLING QUICK. Overheating issues and not good Vintage A/C

PART1

I keep overheating. It was almost 100 degrees today. I think I have a good cooling system, but I keep overheating with the A/C on.

I have a 496 with a Northern Aluminum radiator and a Spal dual fan setup. I have a Weiand high flow water pump as well. Running Antifreeze not water. 160 degree fail safe thermostat.

I was at the Good Guys today and it never fails to overheat while idling or parading. I know that is not easy to cool... Any suggestions before I go back tomorrow? It hit 215 today and dumped out the overflow. Thanks in advance!

PART2

My Vintage A/C is only cold when you first start it. It really blows semi cold and stays there when the temp in the engine comes up. I just dynamatted, or Summit's version of it, and it made a HUGE difference in the heat from the firewall and the floor. But it just doesn't cool well, and am thinking there must be something wrong with the system, but I put a cheap gauge on it and it shows it's well within it's parameters. Could it be from my car getting so hot that it cannot keep up?

Do you have a 16# radiator cap? Coolant Ratio. 70 water 30 coolant. Donít need the 50/50.
Electric or mechanical fans?

Isolate and diagnose will require you check everything.
Take nothing for granted. Assume nothing is right.

Do you have a baseline tune? If not bring her to a baseline.
(For the moment turn off the A/C get her tune right and see if you don't stay cool under the hood first. Then check tune with A/C engaged. Treat its lack of blowing cold as a separate issue but make sure the compressor clutches on and off and not on all the time.)
Check that the factory shroud covers the radiator core or your aftermarket air management system directs all airflow through the radiator core.
Test your thermostat.
Test the output rate and direction of your water pump.
Check your radiator flow, and pressure.
Check your hoses for collapse or weak wall syndrome.
Test the strength of the antifreeze.

A radiator cap that is Leaking pressure on any radiator will have you blow antifreeze every time.
Plenty of folks found the thermostat bad when they boiled it on the stove, or the water pump pumping in the wrong direction or not at all. Or the impeller chewed up.
Weak walled hoses that start off hard but end up when hot collapsed or flattened restrict your flow.

Just some common areas to check.

What size is your exhaust and hedder primaries? I had a 454 in my 72 Chevelle and I could feel the heat coming off the hedders. I increased the diameter of the primaries to 2" and it solved the problem. Just a thought.....

Re: HELP COOLING QUICK. Overheating issues and not good Vintage A/C

How radical is your 496 ?

Does your distributor use vacuum advance and is it hooked to the intake manifold?

Sorry, that's the first thing I ask when people have cooling problems mainly because so many distributors don't come with vacuum advance.
