Hood insulation

Why would you do this? Back in the day i had to put a L88 hood on my car to gain carb clearance but it seemed to me back then that the biggest benefit i got from that hood was engine compartment venting. I have been puzzling a little on how to retain a stock appearing hood but to vent the compartment when i get shown an ad for a complete underhood insulation package. I am guessing im in the minority in this effort. Am I?

Re: Hood insulation

Hodd insulation is used so the heat from the engine doesn't ruin the paint on the hood I would guess at least that's what I always assumed.

Re: Hood insulation

Hood insulation was for sound deadening and part of the RPO Z87 package.

X2 for sound

With regards to under hood venting. There is so much air moving in the engine bay when the car is moving added venting is not needed.

Re: Hood insulation

Not sure I agree with you about the air John. Back in the day after a build I had a heating issue on this car, not bad but a nuisance. When I dropped that glass hood on it it cleared up. My oil temp/pressure profile also changed at the same time which I promptly misinterpreted. The am radio lost any semblance of functionality too. Does hood insulation have a great impact on cab noise?

Glass hood would tick off the old radio's. Corvette's had a metal cover over the distributor bc of the glass.

Re: Hood insulation

Hopefully this time around the original hood is going back on. I wish i could find a glass SS hood just to shave weight. I still would like to vent it.

Re: Hood insulation

Go hoodless. Will save weight and give the ultimate engine bay venting. JK

Re: Hood insulation

Hood vents just behind the core support have been shown to significantly reduce underhood temperatures.
