BeCool Recovery Tank Puking Every Drive

Hello All!

Need a little help. Have a '69 with a 327 in it. It has a BeCool Aluminum raditaor with dual electric fans and a billet BeCool recovery tank. Every time I take the car out for a drive it pukes coolant out of the recovery tank.

I'm talking a decent amount of coolant sometimes up to 20oz. It happens while idling or after it is shut off. The car is not over heating at all and the warmest it gets is around 180-182 while driving/idling. The cap was just recently replaced with a 14-18lb cap as the previous one wasn't sealing properly and coolant was spraying out all over the engine bay. I also check the coolant level and it is about 1.5-2 inches down from the top when cold.

I do not believe the head gasket is blown because both oil and coolant look clean. I'm also not seeing any white smoke or anything like that. I'm just stumped though... any suggestions would be welcome.

This car needs an exorcism !

Re: BeCool Recovery Tank Puking Every Drive

It's only going to puke for 1 of 3 reasons. It's either overheating due to poor heat transfer at the radiator or you've got a lack of circulation, or 3rd you still don't have a good seal at the cap and it's being forced out due to expansion. How soon is it puking? Have you checked for a collapsed or weak hose? Checked that the new cap is sealing, possibly by putting a hose on the expulsion line and blowing back towards the radiator with the drain open to see if you can blow through. Also is the new cap the correct pressure rating?

Are you adding more coolant every time after it pukes? If you are stop adding and see if the puking stops. It should find its operating level....

Both hoses are new. There is a spring in the lower one. It usually pukes after 15 mins of running when it is good and warm. I started it up briefly with the cap off and it looks like there is plenty of circulation. BeCool recommends a 13lb cap and like I said I have a 14-18lb cap on there now.

Don-no I haven't added anymore coolant because for that reason hoping it would find its operating level.

The expulsion line coming off of the radiator that leads to the bottom of the recovery tank has slight bend/crease in it. Is it possible this is not allowing the fluid to return to radiator from the recovery tank?

If the line is kinked it likely will not work properly. Also make sure the lines to the recovery tank are not reversed, assuming it has two lines.

Ok I'll start by redoing that line. Do you think I should get the correct 13lb cap as well? Or does that not matter.

I doubt it will make any difference.

Is there any coolant remaining in the recovery tank after the "fluid puke"... and checked when the engine is cold (and coolant level in the radiator is about 1.5-2 inches down from the top)?
If so, the kink in the overflow line may be impeding the coolant flow from the recovery tank returning to the radiator.

Are you using the 1 Pint recovery tank?
If so, it is possible that the recovery tank may be too small for the amount of fluid that is bypassing the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

Any chance you've got the hoses reversed on the overflow tank?

Re: BeCool Recovery Tank Puking Every Drive

I haven't checked the coolant recovery tank to see if there is anything remaining. It's an aluminum tank so I cant see inside like a plastic one. The tank I have is 7inches long by 3inches in diameter.

Bill-according to the manual the lines are correct (line coming from rad comes to bottom of recovery tank & the top vents to atmosphere)

Re: BeCool Recovery Tank Puking Every Drive

Have you tested the radiator cap? May be a 14-16 but also may not be holding as rated.
