1969 396 block

If the vin number on block starts with 19w does that mean is a nova block ? Would a camaro be 19n for a Norwood built camaro 396 ?

Re: 1969 396 block

Yes, W was for Willow Run, MI and they built the Nova. N would be Norwood, OH for the Camaro.

This is my first post so I’m trying to figure how to respond. Would $800 be a fair price for std bore , I can see original code and nova vin number ? I want to buy it for a period correct 69 camaro L78 and it is a 4 bolt , do you think it’s a fair price

Re: 1969 396 block

Yes, that's a good price IF (and that's a big if) it's a usable block. Before you shuck out the bucks, take it to a reputable machine shop and have them check it for cracks, make sure the cylinders haven't shifted, etc... (They'll know what to do). Then, if they say it's good, go for it.

If the seller won't agree to those terms, walk away. There are just too many garbage blocks out there that you don't see issues with until after the it's been rebuilt. Remember, after 50 years, who knows what's happened to these things. Especially the high HP ones. They were usually run hard and put away wet! (An old equestrian adage)

By the way, what's the full partial VIN and the suffix code?

Ed

Re: 1969 396 block

You might want to post that over on the NOVA SITE as well. They don't seem to have an "orphans" section but you could probably post it somewhere anyway. And you never know. The car may still be out there!

Not sure what yellow box you mean, but you can't delete posts. Only the moderators can do that.

Re: 1969 396 block

That box is for mods to use to delete or edit posts. You can not delete a post as it takes a mod or admin to do that.

Not that it is terribly important, as you can make a two bolt block into a four bolt anytime you want. But how do you know it is a four bolt? Is it a bare block out of the car sitting on the floor? Generally a four bolt block was also machined for the oil cooler lines used on Corvettes, but not on a Camaros or Novas. That is the only external indication that you have a four bolt block.

Re: 1969 396 block

The JH code (L78 396/375) will be a 4 bolt main, but here's what Dave's referring to if you want to verify.
