69 z-28 Hidden headlights?

I bought a 69 camaro z-28 project car, all hidden numbers match, has x33 and D80 on trim tag, 712 interior, guy has had it sitting around since he bought it in the 80's for $500 he said. He told me it had hidden headlights when he bought it back then and over the years someone robbed them off car. Could a real Z-28 have come with hidden headlights?

Yes, X33 can have the RS package. The fenders should have RallySport emblem, tailpan should have reverse lights and rubber plug/wiring in the trunk for a true RS. Check the firewall for RS rubber grommet and headlight switch should be vacuum controlled.

Just to list a few....

Welcome, and looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Did you just stumble upon this car and decide to buy it, or did you research Camaro's and then decide this is the one?

If all of drive train is missing but trim and vin tags never been off car but it needs floors, trunk center floor and few other pieces is it still worth restoring as a x33 z28? No back up lights or cut outs for them in rear lower panel, new quarters, body only was bead blasted and expoxy primed

Re: 69 z-28 Hidden headlights?

If the tail panel looks original and there isn't reverse lights down below the bumper on either side then chances it isn't an RS but could of been patched. Like others mentioned check in the trunk on either side of the bumper braces and see if there is a wire going down through a grommet to the supposed reverse lights below.
Crawl under the dash and see if a hose is attached to the headlight switch.
Also with the grill off, check in the front section of the fenderwells and see if there is approx. 2" hole in them near the front where the bellcranks go through. There is more telltale signs but this should verify.

Re: 69 z-28 Hidden headlights?

Bill, have you done the tear-down or is this the way it was when you purchased it from the guy that bought it in the 80's? The fact is it looks like the rear quarters have been replaced, so the rear tail panel could have been replaced as well. if it has been replaced, then that means whoever replaced it did not try to replace it as an R/S tail pan. If I were you, I would definitely use the info that the previous owner gave you and I would say that it originally came as an R/S Z-28. Since it is coded as an X-33, it surely could have been and since the guy said it used to have hidden headlights, I would, for originality purposes, move forward and restore it as an R/S Z-28. Just my 2 cents..

The RS option was available on ANY Camaro, 6cyl or V8, coupe or convertible, it is an appearance package not related to performance.

RS is "Not" a factory option for for following 1969 Camaro's. So RS is "NOT" available for any Camaro.

Camaros.org:
X44, X55, X66, and X77 cars cannot have the Rally Sport (or style trim) option.

You're splitting hairs now. At time of purchase RS was available on any Camaro. if ordered with RS it would have changed the X code accordingly

He is not splitting hairs, he just doesn't understand how an X code was used.

You couldn't order an X code. It was something used on one production line for part of one model year to tell the body builders what trim to install. It started out as a chalk mark and progressed to being stamped on the trim tag. It meant nothing outside the Fisher body plant and was not even decoded until the 1980's when collecting Camaro's became popular.

If you got in your time machine and went back to 1969 and tried to order an X33 Camaro, they wouldn't know what you were talking about. They would however let you order the RS option on any Camaro you wanted.

Trim tag was made before the car. I have read the assembly process, but still cant tell exactly when it was riveted to the firewall. Pretty sure it was early on and definitely on the Fisher Body side. Anyone who knows for sure?

Here is a picture during the assembly where you can see the tag is in place while they are still building the body.
