What muffler?

In my 69 camaro with the 396 I need some recommendations for what mufflers I should use. I have a bigger cam and I love the lope that is produced. I want it to be pretty loud but not straight piped loud. What are your guys recommendations?

Re: What muffler?

I've tried a LOT of different mufflers over the past 3 years and the Flowmaster 10 series are by FAR the best. Here is a video of them on my car:

I had a set of Black Widow Venom 250s on my LS3 swapped 67. I cant tell you how much I HATED THEM.... My wife said it perfectly... "it sounds like a ricer on steroids..." Took them off after 50 miles....

Re: What muffler?

I heard a big Mopar rumble by at parade speed this past weekend. Sounded healthy. I was told the car had MWA’s ? on it. Would have liked to hear them on idle and on it too. Dunno if i have that name right or not. Id like to know what they were.

Re: What muffler?

Followed your link Doug. Sounds like a loud SOB. Has a crackle in it too in a couple of the clips. Not to my liking. Thanks.

Re: What muffler?

Muffler choice, in terms of "sound", is subjective and each person will have their own preference as to what that sound is.

The problem with sound clips is rarely does the car in the clip have the same engine, cam, headers (or not)., pipe diameter,X or H pipe, pipe dumped before axle, behind rear wheel or pee shooters out the back

Flowmaster 40's have been my preference on SBC/SBF cars I have with pipe ending behind rear wheel on the Camaro and at bumper on the 70 Torino 302 car. The 302 car has long tube headers so it is "louder" than my 327 with stock manifolds. Definitely no "crackle" with the 40's, just that deep guttural muscle car sound...IMHO

Re: What muffler?

The only muffler that reduces sound and doesn't kill horsepower is the Dynomax Super Turbo - 3" inlet and outlet.

I'll take a 10 hp loss anytime if I can still hear the radio.

Re: What muffler?

X2 on the Ultra Flows. I have them on my car now.

A note on the ultra flow is they claim to be stainless but, after 5 years I can tell you first hand that the only stainless on the muffler is the shell. The perforated core is mild steel and rusts fast. The stainless shell is even welded with mild steel so all the weld seems rust. Would be great if it was a true stainless muffler.

Before the ultra flows I had Spintechs. They are great too. They are pretty tame sounding at idle and part throttle but when you open it up, lookout, they are fierce. I had gotten many compliments on those.

I have pypes violators and like them. They sound nice at idle and cruising. A little drown at about 2100 rpms but not bad. But when you put your foot into it hopefully there isn’t any elderly people or baby’s around 😆
