Speedometer needle sticks at 50 mph

My speedometer seems to work fine up to around 45 mph but once I get to 50 or above it sticks. Once I slow down and touch the needle it will pop back to the correct lower speed. I can feel some resistance in the needle when I manually move it between 50 and 80. I have a new cable and the odometer is accurate. The needle is not touching the face of the gauge so the resistance is internal. I tried manually moving it back and forth several times but so far that has not loosened it up enough to bounce back freely. Is there some place I can put some oil or something to lubricate the needle without causing any problems with the gauge?
