68 Camaro RS, Rear Diff question (gears)

I have an original numbers matching car, and am restoring and nodding my Camaro. I currently pulled the 327, and the power glide, and installed a 383 stroker and a 70pR4 trans. I am also having a new driveshaft cut for me, can't being myself to cut the original, because it's a BIG NO NO! I am wanting to put new gears in it, and I believe I have the 3.08 gears currently, but I need to beef it up some. So... questions are, what usually came with my type of car, does have factory A/C, which does work? And the other what would you guys recommend I put in there?
I usually asked my ex husband these questions, but... he's an ex now. lol.

If you look on the front of the passenger side axle tube, you'll find numbers stamped in there. Let us know what they are and we can tell you the axle ratio...... assuming the gears haven't already been changed.

Welcome, MsBelly, to the Club.
You can jack up rear axle, both wheels off the ground, mark a tire and driveshaft, and rotate the wheel and count number of turns the driveshaft does as this event will give you an idea of ratio, ex. three turns verses one turn equals 3.08:1.
My opinion would be a 3.55:1 or 3.73:1.
If you have any documentation of the Camaro, like Bill of Sale, or Protecto-Plate, the metal card, these will give ratio and axle code as described by Steve.

Awesome! I actually have the driveshaft off of it right now, so I will go grab it and look at it! Thanks! Sorry, I didn't know how to reply to you guys, lol. I'll post the numbers ASAP.
The car was 98% original when I bought it, and I am 99% sure that it was the truth. The battery, plugs and wires were the only things replaced when I had bought it lol, so hopefully the gears are actually still the original gears. 🙂 Hey, ya never know, right?

As Steve suggests, the axle code is on the rear axle, not the driveshaft.
Take a wire brush in your journey.
Just a warning - you will be asked for pictures - BTW - Correct year

Re: 68 Camaro RS, Rear Diff question (gears)

also OP, when you rotate the rear tires one turn and count the revolutions of the drive shaft, or pinion yoke if DS is removed, you will discover the rear gear ratio as described by Everett and......if both tires rotate forward when you spin one tire forward you have a "posi" rear end. If one tire rotates in opposite direction you do not. If doing a gear swap and you don't have a Posi its a good time to add one as the labor is part of the gear swap. I would get a Eaton posi if you don't already have a posi (posi-traction)

You will also need to change the driven gear in the 700R4 to correct speedo reading if you change rear gear ratios

This calculator is useful in determining the right driven gear. They are about $10 to buy

You can find a app online that will let you enter speed, RPM and tire height. That will tell you your current gear ratio.
