Re: Recall on Harbor Freight Jack Stands

Thanks for the heads up on this. I think my son has a couple sets from there.

I think mine are a lot older than that.

Re: Recall on Harbor Freight Jack Stands

Seems like HF would be sending out notice to those who have purchased them in the past ? Not everyone has a computer, nor I hadn't seen this until you posted it. Thanks !

Re: Recall on Harbor Freight Jack Stands

Thanks for posting this! My Camaro is sitting up on a pair of 61196 stands right now. Fortunately they are as low as they go so no chance of collapsing. But looks like I'll be going to HF tomorrow to get a new pair.

My orange ones have models numbers:
P38846 for the 3 ton
P38847 for the 6 ton.

Stamped into the metal along the bottom are the words:
3 ton capacity
or
6 ton capacity

Money can't buy you happiness but it can buy you car parts which is bout the same thang.

Re: Recall on Harbor Freight Jack Stands

This is pretty scary. But I always use a back up or second method to hold up the car when I'm under it. If I'm only using one jack stand, I will set up the jack as a back up in case the jack stand fails or slips.

The article notes the #'s involved in the recall are on the sticker either on the base of the stand or top of the stand depending on ton rating...assuming the sticker(s) are still on your stands. I don't know if the color of the stand itself is the criteria

I have 3, 4 & 6 ton stands and I believe at least 2 of my sets are HF but are not the model #'s listed in the recall. I have had my stands for several years.

according to the notice the tooling to make these stands is worn so the detents in the shaft were compromised making them unstable to lock

While we all use these stands especially when the wheels need to remain free and accessible I am more inclined to use wood cribbing under wheels entirely for times where I need to get the car up quite high for things like trans swaps. I have previously used cribbing under stands before to increase height

Re: Recall on Harbor Freight Jack Stands

I just bought a set of 61197 a few months ago. Used them once on sons lifted Tundra. Guess Ill take them back and get a set from somewhere else. Maybe Craftsman has some American made ones. I didnt know anything about it until I saw a clip ad from Road and Track website.

Yes, I received an email today on them. I bought two pair of the ones that are in question. I did have one drop one time. I thought it was very concerning. I remember it doing it. I have been under my car plenty of times with these. Thinking since they were 3 Ton that I would be safe. But after that happened I have been putting something under the car in case the stand failed (Cribbing under wheels if the wheels are to stay on). All four of mine are on the list - 61197
