I currently have 2 1/4. The shop suggests i go a bit bigger to 2.5 or 3" ( give it more room to breath ) as it generates alot of heat. Motor feels like its generating more power, but feels restricted from distributing its potential due to the current exhaust
2 1/4 was factory, however I think many folks go larger....Speaking of larger, "Larger Dave" would be a good guy to ask. Surely he'll stop by here eventually....
For a big block Chevy, I would recommend no less than a 2 1/2” diameter exhaust system. There are many nice affordable kits out there that will be a nice improvement over what you currently have. Most kits are available in stainless steel as an option which will outlast the car. You will also want exhaust pipes that are mandrel bent which will not restrict the flow in the bends due to compression bending that most shops do. Again, most kits that are currently available are mandrel bent.
