Does anyone have pictures or dimensions of the factory holes on the rear quarter and front fenders of a 1968 Camaro with rally sport rocker panel trim?
I have the new trim and clip kit, and it looks like there should be 4 clips in each piece of trim, plus a screw on the end of each door piece.
Also, the screw plates for the door trim seem very loose. There is some foam included that is supposed to get wedged under the clip to keep it in place until the screw is tightened. Is that how the originals where?
I realize this is a 69 centric site but there has to be someone who knows how this unique 68 RS only trim was installed on both sides of the factory.
Here is the Classic HQ molding clip set I have:
Even though Classic HQ is known for having high quality reproductions, these must be wrong. There are 24 clips in this kit, I don't have that many holes, and the moldings that where removed have a different clip. I am a little reluctant to drill 24 3/8" holes along the bottom of my car just to install the trim. There are some existing partially filler/paint covered holes.
My Chevrolet factory assembly manual shows 3 3/16" holes in the front fender and clips that have a nut. These Classic HQ clips have no nut and require a huge 3/8" hole to install.
My Fisher body manual only shows the door and rear quarter trim with "method of molding retention" as screws. It does not show how and where the holes are located.
It's like the old saying " they don't make'm like they used to".....most repro parts are a perfect example It's not just Classic, all the vendors I've seen show the same style clips as in your pic. They do offer templates for locating the holes but are probably different from the factory. Might try searching your local body shops for clips closer to OE ???
I have the same question. I bought the template kit for locating the holes, but for the middle piece that goes on the doors one of the holes is in the corner and you can see it from the inside of the door!
Anyone have pictures of the aftermarket 3-piece RS lower body molding kit for a 68?
Hard to believe it's been 11 years and I still have not got this done. Car is getting some trim work done (putting vinyl top back on) and I want to get this molding put back on as well. I recently found the original style clips which is why I never finished the job in 2008.
What I have, and believe to be original, does not match the template for the door and rear quarter.
My doors have 4 big holes in the middle for the push in clips and a smaller hole on each edge for the threaded stud clips.
My rear quarter panel has 2 big holes near the rear and a smaller hole near the front. The instructions show the same clip used in all 3 holes on the quarter panel but that wont work unless I enlarge the hole and I don't think that's correct.
Anyone have an original car or knowledge of one they can comment on the clips?
I can't say for sure James. Mine was missing the moldings also. My feeling is the repro clip set you have pictured isn't entirely accurate. 14 clips provided for big holes. That's 4/door and 3/quarter. The quarter probably originally had a smaller clip with nut as used on the fenders (3/fender, 6 pictured). Should've had 8 (3/fender, 1/quarter). Probably not enough access for the 2 rear quarter holes to install nuts. Does that make sense ?
I think your right. My holes are exactly like the ones shown on CRG. I used one of the front trim piece clips with a stud for the small hole in the quarter panel. I think 2 retainers will be enough for the front piece. Not sure why the repro clip vendors have not run into this issue before.
Trying to insert the picture from CRG here but it will not appear.
