Restoration of Manual Steering Gearbox

Hi Camaro owners:

I need to have my 1968 Camaro original manual steering box refurbished/restored back to original factory condition. Can anyone recommend a well-respected company that restores old manual gear boxes? Also, was the factory manual gearbox ratio 24:1 with a 3-speed transmission? Finally, looking for a recommendation on a spray paint to use to replicate the correct natural steel color.

Many thanks. Tommy68

I've sprayed a few things with Seymour Cast Blast. I don't think I have any pictures to post but I thought it was good enough at the time.

Re: Restoration of Manual Steering Gearbox

It is easy enough to do if you have the tools to do it. And can get it adjusted correctly. I rebuilt one and sent one to Marty at Manual Gearbox Rebuilds ? PowerSteering.com

I skipped the extreme detailing, because I did it myself. Prices:

•Manual Steering Gearbox Rebuilds: From $239.00

•Standard Detailing: Included at no charge (priming & painting)

•Extreme Detailing: $49.00 (takes the unit down totally to bare metal. Self etching primer is applied then the housing is sprayed with “cast” paint. Aluminum and steel parts are glass bead blasted and clear coated.)

Re: Restoration of Manual Steering Gearbox

Hi folks -

That's very useful information. On the extreme detailing, I understand that the correct color is natural steel for both the manual steering box and Pitman arm. Once the parts are taken down to natural steel, is it best to put an engine high temp satin clear coat on the housing and you're basically good to go? Maybe VHT Flameproof Satin Clear Spray Paint. Unfortunately, I've heard it may yellow over time and might be too "shiny". Is there a better satin clear spray bomb out there or is it just better to use self etching primer and then use Seymour Cast Blast paint on the gearbox housing/Pitman arm and the aluminum and steel parts glass beaded blacked and clear coated? Thanks everyone. Tommy68
