Will people buy the new Camaro?

Here is one for the 'haters who will end up buying a camaro' will like

Source: The American Spectator - Eric Peters

Automotive journalists, bloggers and others have expressed great enthusiasm for the revived Camaro sports couple that GM plans to bring back to market sometime in mid-late 2008. Packing at least 400 horses in Z28 form and with hunky-looking retro-'60s sheetmetal, it's easy enough to understand the excitement.

But liking the car and buying the car are two very different things. GM may be in for a rude surprise -- and left holding the bag (again).

Consider it. I very much like Ferraris. But unless my financial situation changes for the better considerably, all my lust will never translate into an F430 parked in my driveway.

Now granted, the new Camaro is no six-figure Ferrari. But it is a double-digit gas pig. That comes with the big V-8 (and big V-6, in base models) under its hood. With gas cresting $3 per gallon, topping off the 20-something gallon tank of a V-8 muscle car will run you about $70. And that will last you about a week, maybe. So $300 bucks per month for fuel.

If I can get my finances in order by 2009, I will be ordering a convertible!

I can't afford to buy ANY new car right now, but if I could it would NOT BE THE NEW CAMARO. I think it is UGLY, but that's just me...

Re: Will people buy the new Camaro?

If GM can't make the camaro in the same price range as the mustang I can't see getting any fringe buyers. I think the die hard camaro gm people will buy their share of them, but if they price themselves out of the market why would a non loyal brand buyer purchase a camaro over a mustang or a ricer.

Re: Will people buy the new Camaro?

So the new camaro isn't due out for better than a year from now? Man, who knows what the market will be like then but it doesn't seem to be trending towards gas guzzlers...They better price it pretty damn cheap if they want to sell a bunch of them!!

Re: Will people buy the new Camaro?

I agree with gro51. It is hideous. On the gas note though, I personally don't care about paying $3/gal. My car gets 3mpg and I run Sunoco GT race gas. $6.90/gal or so. We may as well accept the fact that gas is going to continue to go up and there's not a damn thing we can do about it. Maybe once the douch bag(a.k.a. George Bush)gets out of office and we start worrying about our country and not everyone else, then and only then will we have a chance.

I'll second that.

I was eally, REALLY looking forward to a new Camaro.
Then I saw the prototype. Oh boy. GM better start advertising on Saturday morning cartoons, 'cause it looks like that's the target demographic.
That's a real shame for buyers like me that didn't ever want to consider a Challenger or Mustang. Now we might have to. Bummer.

Re: Will people buy the new Camaro?

I have to say, even after seeing it in person at Carlisle- I wouldn't own one. From the back there are no clues that it is a camaro- the rear is fat, the tires/wheels are oversized, it just doesn't do it. It's a shame, Ford hit the mustang dead on, and the new Challenger looks good too. The Camaro is too futuristic. The few things they tried to copy from the 69 are not the good things-- (i.e. the gages!) But that's just me.
