Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 2012

So where is the Z/28?

Quote:
A hot Camaro is coming and will be powered by the Cadillac CTS-V's 6.2-liter V8 with roughly 550 hp. Given how the Camaro SS with a 6.2-liter V8 that puts out a mere 426 hp can already clock a 0-to-60-mph sprint in less than 5 seconds, the ZL1 is going to be scary fast. This Camaro will go toe-to-toe with Ford's Shelby GT500—and BMW M3 and Porsche 911 owners should watch their rearviews too. Price? We'd guess between $42,000 and $48,000.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (January 2012)

6.2L Supercharged V8 engine

Intercooled Eaton supercharger. All-aluminum V8 expected to have at least 550 horsepower. Blinding acceleration, top-end performance and proven reliability coexist happily under the hood.

Who is the quote from? That pricing would kill SS sales in a heartbeat.

My 2SS cost me $34,500 (msrp $36,000) so I don't see how that ZL1 pricing will hurt regular SS's... I only hope it is anywhere near that low!

Not that a 2SS is a base model but what you bought is $600 worth of options over a base 2SS. A fully loaded 2SS will msrp at about $48K and if you can get a ZL1 for $42K - $48K it's a no-brainer!

I think you're comparing apples to oranges Dennis. If I want a loaded 2SS at 48,000 do you really think I'd be happy with a bare ZL1 at 42? I don't believe for a second that I could get as many options on the ZL1 at 48 as I could on a 2SS. for the same price. Just my .02.

Have you spec'd out the ZL1? If I had $48k to spend on a Camaro I'd buy the ZL1 over a loaded 2SS in a heartbeat. The HP, suspension, brakes, wheels&tires, alum hood and the spoilers/ground effects take the car far beyond a loaded SS.

I'd love to see all that for under $50k, I just don't believe it will happen.

Can't say I don't agree with that. I just priced a "loaded" SS like I would order, it's $38K. I looked at the 50 available in my Zip and there is one at 48K. It includes a Synergy package (of appearance items) for 10K more. So on an SS for 48 you get stripes and red stiches in the interior. Not sure what a base ZL1 looks like but I'm still not convinced the same person that wants a 48K SS is interested in a 48K ZL1 instead. I'll have to wait until more info is available about the ZL1 to be sure.

Chevrolet publishes the ZL1 will have at least 550hp, the SS has just under 430. The engine is a 6.2L V8 with an intercooled Eaton Supercharger. The suspension is called a track tuned magnetic ride where sensors instantly adjust the ride on the fly using some form of magnetic fluid for dampening.

Here's more on the car. http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro-zl1/#image1 Click on featured spec's.

Re: Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 2012

Hey Brian, to answer your question about the Z28, everything I have read indicates the HP version of the 5th gen was initially thought to be the Z28 but ended up being the ZL1. On Edmunds.com I read Chevrolet officials declined to comment when asked about the Z28.
