Horsepower automatic vs manual

I just bought a 2012 Camaro with a 6.2 engine and am confused about the horsepower rating. If it's a manual tranny, it has more horsepower than a automatic. It that's true for a Camaro, why is it not true in a Corvette with the same set up ? In the case of the Camaro, I was told that the automatic tranny uses 30 more horsepower to operate. Doesn't the Corvette have the same issue ?

You know, that is a great question. Of course, unless they know how to drive a stick the guy with the auto will smoke em every time.

Engine has the same HP. RWHP will be slightly lower with an auto. 15-20 maybe but probably not 30.

BTW it is the same for Vettes

Re: Horsepower automatic vs manual

I'm not questioning the tranny using more hp, but in their advertising, Corvette doesn't say anything about a reduction in hp, whereas Camaro does. Just wondered why. I don't remember the numbers at the moment, but the Camaro with auto has a specific engine and the manual tranny car says it's a different engine number. I think one is something like L99. Just wondering what gives.........

Re: Horsepower automatic vs manual

The answer is simple and based in history. Since the Corvette is the flagship of the Chevrolet brand, GM has always rated it as the highest hp Chevy you can buy because when people want to shell out the dough for a Vette, they don't want to play second banana in hp wars. Go back to the LT-1 engine in the 1970 Z-28 and the 1970 'Vette. Same engine, same transmission. Z-28 rated 10 hp less due to "more restrictive exhaust". Its all a marketing decision and nothing to get all wrapped up in. Enjoy that new Camaro.

Re: Horsepower automatic vs manual

There are differences with the Camaro engines.

LS3 Manual trans rated 426hp at the flywheel

L99 Automatic trans rated at 400 @ the flywheel

The automatic has a different camshaft with variable cam timing as well as displacement on demand, which the LS3 does not.

It is generally true that the automatic uses up more hp and thus even less shows up to the rear wheels.

Example Stock vs Stock on the NicKey Dynojet we see LS3 hp in the 360s -370s and L99 hp in the 320s to 330s.
