Engine chip HP question good or bad

I have a 2010 Camaro SS. There are a number of companies selling performance
chips for these cars and others, GForce, PCN, US Musclemods and others.
They claim anywhere from30 to 80 HP increase and a increase in gas mileage.
On the net some people say they do what they are advertised to do and some
say they do not. Just looking for the truth.

Thanks
John

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

IIRC the 2010 (as well as all Camaros from 96 forward) utilize a EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) which allows one to change settings with a laptop and the appropriate software (i.e., HPTuners). This is how you alter the timing, knock retard, fuel injector pulse width, fuel shutoff (rev limiter) etc.

Most of the items you mentioned do nothing more than lean out the fuel to air ratio. I don't believe there is a "chip" for these cars.

If it was my car I'd take it to someone with a chassis dyno and adjust it according to what the readout says needs to be adjusted (F/A ratio, knock retard, turn off various sensors if not required, i.e., the sensor beyond the cats if you've installed headers and deleted the cats, etc.). This is what I did with my 02 Z28 when I was racing it.

As always, just my $.02 worth...

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

Let me tell you a little secret before you go out and buy a chip. If you have an auto car, and ever, and i mean ever, ran 87-89-91 ethanol fuel through that engine, the computer has adjusted for it, and you lost 30-40 hp permanently. It only takes once. Well until you unplug the fuses to the computer. It resets the fuel map, and won't adjust back unless you do the fuse pull. Here, is a little writeup on it, most peoples cars are slow off the lot, due to dealerships putting junk fuel in them. Oops.

That thread is a complete train wreck!

5 years, 100 pages: silver bullet, testimonials, doubters, GM issues TSB (bullet is not silver and fuses need to be pulled but not those ones), previous believer becomes doubter - posts video, others say stopwatch doesn't lie, famous tuners quoted anonymously, identities demanded, bickering ensues, and on it goes...

tonight I'm going to pull the dome light fuse from my convertible and see if it improves MPG or ET!

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

I did the fuse pull on my manual...

I also, bought a handheld programmer and had Torq down in Florida put a tune on it.

Lots of Camaro5 members use http://jannettyracing.com/ to remote tunes, I would probably if I didn't already have Torq's.

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

It is a train wreck, agreed, as most forum discussions are on anything. However, it does work. I just posted it because you could see which two to pull. Easier than me trying to explain it. My brothers dynoed 345 at the tires, then 379 after we reset it. His is an auto car though, which if you believe what people say, can make a difference between the LS3 and L99. It was a noticeable difference for his car.

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

go to someone who knows how to tune, do some dyno pulls, done.

"Chips" do not exist.

Unless you drive a 12 valve "cummings"

I'll take some chips for my salsa though.

Does the fuse pull really work, or is that a troll post?

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

Yes I think it does/did. The original source for the Fuse Pull was told by GM to do that, because his car would not even spin the tires. So, he was told to do that from GM directly.

He then posted it and many have had success stories.

Re: Engine chip HP question good or bad

A dyno tune is the best way to go with these cars.
