Will GM learn from Ford mistakes?

According to Motor Trend, the new Shelby GT500 has a curb weight of 3944 lbs!!!! That's crazy I don't car how much power it has. GM- please - if you build a new Camaro keep the curb weight well below 3500 lbs.

How much did an LS-6 Chevelle weigh? Isn't it less than that?

Hopefully.

Speaking of the GT500 - checkout this review of the GT500 and the C6 Corvette

The current weight of the Camaro is just under: 4000 lbs , according to Motor Trend Magazine (and confirmed by insiders.....). Of course this is the engineering estimate which can be off by a couple hundred pounds - usually on the heavy side. Expect the convert to weight a bit more (~+200 lbs).

The problem is that this is a "global" platform from which the Camaro and a few other variants will be built. It needs to meet all kinds of crashworthyness regulations from around the world and it takes a bunch of extra metal in odd places to do that. There may be plenty of opportunities for a racer to lighten the car - but the stock folks will be a bit on the heavy side..... There is a saying that "mass begets mass" which means the heavier something is, the heavier you need to build a structure to hold it - it feeds on itself !!

I agree with TJ.

In today's world a car must meet all kinds of safety and crash requirements. Plus you now have power everything, deluxe A/C, stereo surround sound etc. etc. etc. This is why the new Mustang weighs so much. This is also why the regular 2006 Corvette inspite of giving up about 100 horse power to the Mustang beat the 'Stang by 1/10th in the 1320 because of the 600 or so pound weight advantage.

Remember the Mustang LX 5.0's of the very late 1980's. Especially the trunk type/notchbacks. These cars were around 2900 lbs or so and had about a 400-500 lb weight advantage over the 5.7L IROC-Z's. Even though the IROC had about 20 more horsepower that mattered little when you give up 400-500 lbs.

On the weight and global structure issue, at least all the players have to abide by the same rules

Those 87-93 LX 5.0 Mustangs were the best bang for the buck!

Re: Will GM learn from Ford mistakes?

No, they haven't learned from Ford's successes either. GM is still out there trying to re-invent the wheel.
