Wink Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

Helped a buddy's son do this on his 1972 last summer.
He looked at several system, including the fancy sequential units, and then bought the Dakota Digital units from Summit (under $200 IIRC with the LED type flasher also ordered).
As noted above, you'll need a 'digital' LED type flasher driver for these conversions - you're standard 'load' type flashers will not work ...

The side markers are an easy plug in conversion using an LED 194 type replacement bulb.
These can be found at lots of local chain type auto parts stores or ordered from Summit and others on line.
Be SURE to check specifications to be sure they will fit and put out the required amount of light needed - some are pretty lame

Same goes for dash and other interior lamps in many cases, you can find replacement LED bulbs for many of the locations.
The indicators, door lighting. glove box(es) and others come to mind.

Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

Whatever you do please don't turn it into a FAKE RS! I've seen so many standard front end cars with the bumpers cut short. Looks weird.

If you make it into an RS at least do it right...

Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

there was a guy on NASTYZ28 that was doing some cool LED tail lights but I think he slipped in to darkness and quit making them. Made a really nice product though. I bit the big one and bought a Dakota Digital VHX series dash recently and will start the install on it this weekend(just finishing a motor swap too) I'll try to post some shots of it when I get done. I want to do LED's in my markers and backup lights at least but I found that the LED's I have to replace my 194 lights are really VERY dim when I put them in to the sockets on my 70. They seem to work fine in everything else I have so I don't understand where it's acting dumb. I even measured the voltage at the socket and am getting a good solid 12-13 volts depending on whether the motor is running or not. LED barkes and taillights would be great but my car seems to carry pretty good lighting just using a 3157 bulb instead of an 1157. I agree on not making a clone RS out of it too. I LOVE my full bumper car and I REFUSE to do a cowl hood. I've got plenty of motor under the stock hood. Just use a performer RPM or a performer air gap(same carb height) and a good drop-base air cleaner. Then again, some folks really like a cowl hood......... good luck with it. Always like seeing another 2nd genner out there!!

Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

You'll need a relay to make the Cruise Control work when using the silly LED brake liights.

Considering the cost of Incandescent 1156 and 1157 bulbs and their rather long life span,,,LEDs are silly!

Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

How is the wiring on your car doing OP? I have a 70 and its wiring is quite crusty in some places. If you haven't looked into new wiring, you might wanna do that first.

Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

I think you need to prioritize what to do with your car. I would think LED would be last on the list. . . .especially if you need body panel replacement. Think about suspension, steering, fuel injection and the mechanics. Good luck in what ever you do.

Re: 1970 Camaro want to modernize

HID's are illegal in the states unless mounted with self levelers. Finding a wrecked Lexus that will donate the entire package would be expensive and time consuming. Why not go with sliverstar or super bright LED or halogen headlights that would be legal.
