Block codes... original?

We got some of the 72 RS cleaned up today... checking the engine for originality... here is what I found:

3970014
426 73

Engine was rebuilt in 1987, hoping it the oem motor. VIN is 1Q87H2N.

I have discovered that it was originally an automatic, PO put in the 4-speed sourced from a 73 Z28 parts car.

Re: Block codes... original?

You have to look at the pad on the front of the motor behind the alternator. there should be numbers stamped with the last numbers of the vin of the car and a code with bigger letters. The numbers you have listed are the casting number ( I believe 3970014 is a 350) and the other looks like the date code 426 73 would be April 26, 1973. Maybe that motor came with the transmission from the parts car?? Pictures would help

Re: Block codes... original?

so it looks a 350/4 from a BelAir... darn. PO pulled this engine from a 73 Z28 but I guess it wasnt the original engine in it either.

Suffix's can be tricky ...
And since several things in the 'Partial' (1st set of digits you list) and the Suffix are not quite as they should be there might still be some checking to do here if you are really interested in the engine origin ...

First - the pad should be carefully cleaned and then re-read using a good light source and a viewer if needed to see all the information clearly.

The following should be re-read and noted;
Partial - should have the Division and Year code ahead of the "R" you posted in the sequence.
Suffix - The "1" you posted is most likely a 'T', and is the engine assembly plant - The "CKJ" should be re-read to be sure the "J" is actually a 'J' ... From the "R" in the Partial info osted it most likely would be that.

If it is a "J" ... then this engine came from an Impala/Caprice, not a BelAir.
BelAir's received the RPO-L65 base 350 with a 2-barrel.. The only trans was a TH350, unless the optional RPO-LF6 400 with TH400 was ordered, and not many were.
The Impala/Caprices received a RPO-L48 350 with a 4-barrel, along with a TH400 auto.
Only the L6 base units received a Manual trans that year - and it was the last year any 'B' body received a manual trans ...

Hope some of this helps

Re: Block codes... original?

Do what John says and then post the stamped data again.

It MIGHT, and I say MIGHT, be a 350 from a 1973 Chevelle built at the Arlington TX plant, but we won't know for sure until we have all of the numbers and letters. Post a pic if you can.

Ohhhh - good call
I hadn't thought of the cross-over production at Arlington including the 'A' bodies also ...
Not sure of the numbering sequences of 'B' vs. 'A' during 73, and wouldn't bother to look up unless more was known.
