COW coded 12 bolt..

I have located a 12 bolt rear...COW coded stamping on the tube. Trying to figure what engine/trans combo in a 1970 Camaro would have used this rear. My understanding is these were a 'one year only' item..??

Thanks..wilma

Re: COW coded 12 bolt..

Not to hijack, but interested to see the 'G3' shift code - CRG states (for 67-69) that axles were coded shift 1 or 2, so did Detroit Gear change to 3 (or more) shifts for the '70 model year on?

Smile Re: COW coded 12 bolt..

The 1970 12 bolt was a one year only rear as GM then switched to the 8.5 10 bolt Corporate rear.

COW is a 3.55:1 non-posi rear.

Re: COW coded 12 bolt..

Got a little more info today..

casting number is 3969341NF

casting date is C 8 0

so, it looks like this is a definitely a 1970 unit...still unsure if this was a Camaro or Firebird setup...

Re: COW coded 12 bolt..

The 1970 12 bolt 3:55 ratio 'COW' rear axle is from a Firebird. It was used on a Formula 400 in both posi & non-posi configuration as well as the TransAm. The 3:55 posi version was a 'COX' code.
The 1970 L78 Camaro came standard with 3:55 ratio but the L78 required posi so it would of had a 'COX' axle code and not the 'COW'.

Hope this helps!
