79 z28

I have a lead on a project car. Saw it last weekend. It is a 79 Z28, numbers matching. White with red/orange striping (not my first choice), red interior Approx 100M miles. Engine and trans rebuilt approx 1,000 miles ago. Was CA car, moved to WI at some point and stored winters. This is the 2nd owner, he bought it in '83. Body is very solid, little rust at trunk hinges and some on drivers door (very small spot on inside near bottom. Started very easy and ran smoothly (did not drive it yet). He is asking $7,000.00. A few questions I have on this car that I'm hoping some of you 2nd gen guys can answer..

Being a CA car what do you think the engine was rated at (HP). I see some info that is 175hp (seems low to me but I'm not sure)

If I take it for a ride what should I be looking for?

I would like to get it up on the rack to examine the underside, again what should I be looking for (common trouble spots)?

Is this a desirable car?or a dog?

I am fairly informed on 1st gen (have a 69 that I spent 2 years on a frame off restore) but completely uninformed on 2nd gen.

Are parts readily available, mainly interior and rubber seals?

Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

My plan for the car would be a light restore, may include a paint job, restriping? If I go that route what are good colors for this car? As I said I'm not a fan of the white with red/orange stiping but since it is a numbers matching I would like to keep a factory look to it.

Again, any insight suggestions wound be appreciated.

Re: 79 z28

Sounds like a lot for a project 79 z. For about 3 more Grand you can get a lower mile original.
I bought my 79 z/28 about 7 years ago for $8500 and its got 36,000 miles on it.
All original paint and interior. I think I got a great deal.

Re: 79 z28

Hopefully I can clear up a few things for you. I am the original owner of a '78 Z28, California car with just under 93,000 miles.

The HP rating for a '79 Z28 California car is 170 with 265 ft. lbs. of torque; these are of course net ratings . If it has an auto trans the rear end ratio should be 3:42. It should track straight with little if any body roll. Here in California it would have to pass smog, so if it has the original exhaust it should have a catalytic converter and single exhaust branching into two after the cat and then 2 resonators in front of the rear axle with dual pipes going up and over the rear axle and exiting under the rear bumper.

The only real weak point I have had with mine is the EGR valve. I think I am on my 3rd one. I would say it is a desirable car and certainly not a dog. Mine will still throw me back in the seat when I floor it although it runs out of oomph pretty quickly. Keep in mind when these cars were made only the Corvette and the Trans-Am were close to a Z28 in performance and handling. I have never had any trouble finding needed parts for mine, and they are pretty readily available, at least what I have needed.

I love my '78 Z. I've owned 7 Camaros thru the years including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gens, and my favorite to drive is my '78 Z. Second gens are only going to go up in value with the prices of first gens pricing many out of the market. If it were me I would keep the car, if you decide to get it, white with the red and orange striping, keeping as much of it as possible factory original, but that is just me.

Hope this helps some. Good luck with your decisions.

Re: 79 z28

Sounds like it is a Driver more than a Project. Based on your description, I would hunt for a lower mileage car in a more desirable color to you.

I'm not a Fan of Color Changes, as that seriously limits you on re-sell

If you can get it on a lift excellent. Rad support at the bottom look on both sides in front of battery tray area the same on D/S. Mine had rust through in those areas. It looked like a small hole but a screwdriver went through and I made a huge hole. The same on both sides. The toe kick of floor pan can hide rust. You can't see from underside but pull the carpet back and the rust is hidden there. Take a screw driver and poke around the whole floor pan. Spring perches. Bottoms of fenders rockers and quarters. A good strong magnet is great for hunting plastic filler... "Bondo" Have fun...
