71 rear shock length

trying to change rear shocks, I bought of a set of Monroe 5831's which are called out on the computer. The length of them are 20 1/2 inches. The removed shocks manufacture unknown are 22 1/2 inches with a 3 inch extension on them, with car setting in a normal attitude the new Monroe's at their extended length fit between the mounts with no means of further travel. What should I do?

Re: 71 rear shock length

Get a pair of air shocks.. You can decide what you want especially if it is an on board air compressor. I had a girl friend that had a Mustang with an in cabin adjustable air shock system. My old 78 Z28 had manual type. had to keep up with A/P or tires would rub out back.

Re: 71 rear shock length

You can buy a shock extension for the lower mounts. I used these when I bought rear shocks for my 80 Z28 that had springs on the shocks so the threaded mount could reach the lower mount hole.

Re: 71 rear shock length

you may want to try a longer shock Gabriel ultra are 21.7 extended , you might still need shock extensions as mentioned by COPO i had a set of Koni rear shocks that needed them even though the car had 2in lowering blocks .you definitely do not want a shock to bottom or in your case top out and slam the piston into one end or the other of the shock .Other then destroying the shock it could be dangerous and cause you to lose control
