1981 z28

Hey Everyone,

I'm new here to the site, and I'm going to be working on my dads Camaro. I was just wondering if i could get some input on where i should start on a restoration. The car has sat in the garage for roughly 17 years now. It hasn't ran since it was parked, the alternator went as we moved in and they assumed the motor was seized. Brakes, all lines, tank, and alternator are what i know need for sure, but is there somewhere i should start with before getting at those parts?

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated greatly!

Re: 1981 z28

Make it safe first. Rebuild front suspension, replace springs and shocks. clean out all fluids and inspect or just replace brake lines. Then rebuild brakes with new pads and shoes as well as wheel cylinders and the master cylinder.

Motors and power train are easy. Pull the 305 and replace it with a bigger SBC (there was a 350 offered in 1981 in the SS but it was an anemic (only 175 horse) and has no parts that are worth reusing; it is just not worth the bother. Just pull it and store the numbers mating engine and transmission for your grand kids to find. Only a quinquagenarian or older rebuilds their own motors any more as it is cheaper and more economically rational to just buy a crate motor (and a crate transmission to match it). The hard part is deciding which motor and transmission to buy, as there are so many choices, price breaks, power levels and warranties to consider when selecting one.
