Mods

Hi i'm a new memeber to the site. I have a '98 camaro SS with just over 90k in kilometers. I'd like to up the horespower on the car! As I'm no mechanic I'd appreciate some recomendations on any shops who specialize in camaro modifications. Ideally, I'd like to get an extra 200 - 250 horsepower, however my funds are limited. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

start with exhaust and intake. SLP's cold air intake is nice and I like the sound of the Borla cat-back. Then have the cam changed, and get new heads if your looking for another 200 horse. For the f-bodies that will put you around 550 at the flywheel... Don't know how long your rear end will last, let alone the internals of your engine.

if you ever get the 200-250 HP your looking for on limited Funds .. Plz. .. Plz. let me know how you did it .

Thats alot of HP your asking for . 98 SS camaros are fast already .. especially if it has the 6spd in it .

The learning curve is expensive indeed With your suggestions Bearcat, it seems a new rear end would have to go along with the added horsepower??? Any comments regarding the addition of a turbo? Is there room under the hood for one?

PTK makes a kit. It routes the turbo up between the radiator and the engine. It looks like a giant octopus of pipes surrounding your engine. It does work well though, if you can stomach the price. Another option, though looked down upon in the turbo world is a remote mount by someone like STS turbo. It basically replaces your muffler with a turbo. They do work, but don't seem to spool as quickly as the front mount setups. They also run really tight exhaust housings to get them to spool, which creates more drive pressure than a front mount would. Have you considered a blower? ATI and Vortech are two excellent options. LS1s seem to take a reasonable amount of boost before blowing up. Should put you in the 500rwhp range with a sane setup. You could probably go 550 or higher if you decide to push the envelope a little more.

Getting 200 additional ponies for cheap isnt going to happen. So now that you know that you can build up to that goal of yours part by part. Im not sure if you have put a new catback system on your SS but that would be a good start. From there you can start looking to make some upgrades to the engine. If you got about $2500 that should get you a good set of heads, cam, larger fule injectors, and a tune that will net it close to 100 ponies increase.

Save you money again and then when you have another $2500 you can invest in new intake, larger throttle body, and add a nitrous kit, and another tune. That should get you close to your 200 HP increase.

Easy bot ons for a 98ss are as following. No cats with Long Tube Headers. These aren't smog legal but add serious power to LS1's. But an SLP Y pipe with flowmaster exhaust. IF 6 speed get the centerforce clutch. Very nice! Then throw a moser rear with 4.11s. This shouldn't be more than 3k. Seriously your car will get mid to low 12s at the track with some good tires. A friend of mine has this on a 00 SS and in the eigth mile he runs 8.0 and 7.90s. Good Luck. If you really want to haul cam it and port the heads= HAUL *** in LS1

if you're from Canada check out SLP and agostino racing

as far as mods an LS1 that can't run a 12-sec quarter with just bolt-ons (NO heads or cam or power-adder) should be taken away from it's owner

start with a 'lid' (the air cleaner cover box)
do all the bolt-on mods
if you have an automatic get a higher stall converter
if you have a manual get a good clutch and gears (rearend as mentioned for big power cars)

but I just caught the word 'budget' . . . LS1 heads and cams aren't cheap . . . nitrous is cheap, but not for everyone

start with the basics (don't overlook weight reduction and suspension)
get it tuned by a pro (no handheld crap)
do the internal engine mods when you have the funds

as far as 200+ hp, I'll caution you to stay realistic and shoot for 400 RWhp . .. . my suggestion is L92heads/L76intake package and a moderate cam with a professional tune, long-tube headers and a good cat-back (listen to many and choose what you like) . . . you can thank me later
