Your friend is mis-informed... The SS came in auto or stick...

Re: need info on 4th gen ss

I remember getting them at my dealership new and yes they came both ways, it was up to the person ordering the car that made the choice.

Re: need info on 4th gen ss

can't you just look in the glove box and look for the code z28 to tell if its one or the other? I do know of a few folks who rebadge the lt1's as ss. In fact my cousin did and he felt like such a poser he took them off 6 months later

Re: need info on 4th gen ss

In '96, '97 (not sure when it changed) complete Z28's were sent across the street to SLP to be converted to SS cars. Sometime along the way they did part of the conversion at the Chevy plant before they went to SLP but all the SS cars started life as Z28s though.

If you PM me the vin I can get the build sheet from GM and send it to you so you know what it did come with as far as options.

Re: need info on 4th gen ss

You can also contact SLP and they should be able to verify the authenticity of your car.

Everybody is correct in the fact that all SS's started life optioned as a Z/28. I ordered my2002 SS through a GM dealer and am 100% certain it's a true SS, being the first owner. My title as well says Z/28. If you run the VIN through GM it will come back as a Z/28.

I'm not sure on '96 - '97 cars, although a '98 and above SS will show the option code WU8 on the drivers door option sticker.
EDIT: Also, if there was any suspension/drivetrain work done on the car SLP would have been required to add a modified sticker to one of the door jambs. On '98 and later cars, I know this is on the rear of the door, on the passenger side. '97 and below may be the same.

Re: need info on 4th gen ss

I have a '97. Just look for "WU8" on the RPO sticker. This sticker will also indicate "Z28" but all SS cars have this. Mine is also an automatic.
