3800 v6 help-engine identification

I am in the process of rebuilding my wifes engine. I pulled it last night and realized that the engine is believed to be a 98 now as there is a 98 in grease pencil on the side of the oilpan, probably a used engine changed before we purchased the car. I was getting ready to order a master kit and see that they list it 2 ways most places. as follows,
1: 95-97 vin "k"
2: 97-01 second gen intake gasket
Now I have rebuilt numerous engines in the past and this is something new to me, both kits list the same exact pieces except for the pistons and gaskets, vin "k" has a complete gasket set and the second gen has head gaskets and a conversion set.
My question is this, is there a difference in the kits as far as pistons and how do you tell if you have first or second generation engines, any help would be appreciated, thanks
