Unhappy 95 v6 Fuel gauge off track!

Ok My fuel level is way off track. It's reading it wrong. When I fill up It goes over the the F Line. I usualy get 350 miles to a tank I fill up every 300 miles. 15.5 gallon tank. When I hit around 200 miles it goes down to about half tank.. Oh jezze I took off the whole dash out I played around with the orange stick that reads it. I started the engine and I was pushing it back and forth it keep going moving pass the F mark. I also took the fuse out for the gauge lights nope still reading it wrong.. I went under the car to see if there is a squeze in the fuel line nope it's all good. I went to the back of the car and went under the rear. I took off the gas cap and took the cover off I can fit my hand in. There was a black thing that had like 4 tubes going into it. I dont know how to fix the problem. Can it be the Fuel sending unit? Please help I love working on my car I do my own repairs as well. So I kinda need help so anyone?

Re: 95 v6 Fuel gauge off track!

I have a 95 Convertible with 3.4 and 5 speed that has the exact same problem. I replaced the fuel sending unit and the gas gauge as well. Total waste of money as it is still doing the exact same thing. I do all the work on my car as well and if there is someting i've missed or a solution to this problem I would like to know what it is as well. Thanks

Re: 95 v6 Fuel gauge off track!

the fuel guage reads a potentiometer in the sending unit to tell the guage the fuel level...if the signal is broken between the guage and the float, the needle will pin over full...if the rheostat in the float (potentiometer) has an open, or broken wire, the guage will read full...if the sending unit has a bad ground, you guessed it, over full...i`d locate the signal wire at the sending unit, and ground it out, to see if the guage is working...if you ground it, and the guage moves, then diagnose the sending unit...hope this helps...

Re: 95 v6 Fuel gauge off track!

The gas tank on fourth gens is kinda shaped like a V. The gauge will stay at full for a long time then start to drop rapidly as the tank empties. The gauge is only good for empty or full readings. They all act this way. If your gauge seems to be moving around rapidly while driving, sort of like a needle dance, the gauge is going bad.
