98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

I just picked up another camaro, for a driver, for the wife. I have a cold starting problem. When the car is cold it cranks a long time and when it starts it runs rough for a bit and then clears up. If I hold the throttle open a little bit is starts quicker but it still misses intill it clears out. The car has 65,000 miles on it. The plugs are AC double platinum plugs. I dont know how long they have been in but from what I recall they should be good for 100,000miles. I could only get to one plug easily and I dont want to pull them out if not needed. anyone know of an TSB-s or had similar problems?

Thanks
Milan

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

Most likely has a bad fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure, if it looses pressure with engine off, I would highly suspect a leaking check valve in the fuel pump.
pressure can bleed down slowly, but shouldn't drop to 0. Idealy it will hold pressure forever.
Those pumps suck to install.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

I thought it would be a bad fuel pump at first also. How would that explain the missfire or rough running?

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

I would suspect lack of ECM f/pump relay control or burnt contacts of the relay.

Turning on the ign switch and you should hear the f/pump hum for a 2-3 seconds. I would wager the f/pump is getting power through the secondary route - oil pressure switch.

Another problem area, confirm fuel pressure first, could be the two wire coolant temp sensor. If the sensor is not 'cold' enough, fuel system will distribute a lean fuel mixture and make the engine crank longer for the engine to 'collect' enough fuel, then the engine starts up.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

Well The pressure goes right up to 45-50 PSI. I will need to let it cool down again and get a reading on the temp sensor. I had to pull it in because I need to replace the alternator and tensioner (The somebody that designed that thing needs to be slapped!) I will install new plugs while its inside.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

The pump whines as soon as the key is turned on. and the coolant sensor is a 3 wire sensor. I unplugged the sensor to inspect for corrosion and nothing... I will let is sit outside and then get a coolant temp reading later this evening.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

I'd probably replace the platinum spark plugs with the stock type.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

I already replaced the plugs and wires (cut the heck out of my hands). It came with double platinum plugs from the factory, so that is what I put back in. I was thinking about possible dirty fuel injectors. It seems to be a cold start problem after it sits for over an hour. I have to open the throttle a little bit and that seems to help. It feels like it is loading up at least one cylinder, as I have to hold the RPMs up untill the plug clears up. I wonder if a faulty coil pack could cause this type of problem?

It could be a faulty coil pack.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

Well I plugged a spark tester to the 3/6 coil pack first thing this morning and its sparking away. I was sure that was the problem..

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

The cold start missfire is not fixed. There was nothing wrong that I could see with the coil output. The injector is the only thing left. I have never seen one that malfunctions dependant on cold temerature. when they get hot I have seen them fail, but not on a cold start. I am stumped.

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

Maybe a can of fuel injector cleaner with the next tankful of fuel?

Re: 98 Camaro 3.8L hard start cold.

I will try swapping the coil pack and injector to another cylinder and see if the computer tracks the miss to another cylinder, is what I am thinking. I have tried the injector cleaner last week...
