No Oil Pressure At Idle..... Help!

hey guys, i have a 1994 z-28 camaro with 101000 miles on it. has an auto trans built with 3000 stall conv. and other misc. bolt ons. my problem is, at an idle the oil pressure drops to zero psi and the check gauges light comes on. then once i take off it goes back to around 30-40. if i stomp on it or even in the mornings when its cold and the oil is thick, i usually have about 60psi. im thinkin its either the oil pump thats old and worn out, or the main bearings are gone either job is not a good one, although one is more cost effective anyone else ever have this happen? and whats really weird, is this is the second camaro i have had this happen too! the other was a 1987 tpi iroc-z. i believe the problem on that was a FRAM oil filter. i know for a fact that they will restrict oil flow, but not sure if that was the case cause i sold it FAST> and no i dont have a fram oil filter on this car

Re: No Oil Pressure At Idle..... Help!

im having the same problem on my94z with 86000 on it after i changed the sender. i was just getting a low reading 15 idle and 20-25 when crusing at 40mph before. so when i did my oil change today i decided to get a sender too i replaced the oil pressure switch/sending unit and when i fired it up it showed the number you want to see even once it warmed up it showed abot 30 at idle.I then shut it off then 15 min later i started it up and went to get something to eat and it started showing less then 5 at idle and about 30-35 when i would get on it so im thinkin it might be air in the system that got trapped in the sensor. I just went outside and tried again after sitting in 30 degrees for 4 hours but it was givin me only 30-35 at cold idle and like 5-10 when it warmed up. so im goona take it in and have them put a guage on it and see what happens you might wanna do that your self because you could try the sender then the pump and it might fix the problem but with out knowing the acctual number before hand your just guessing who knows it could be the cheap fi .because it might even be in the wiring or the guage itself.

Re: No Oil Pressure At Idle..... Help!

hey i replaced the fram i had on there and gives me same crummy pressure at hot idle but will give me almost 75 at cold idle reved up a little and 60 hot WOT or a little better and about 45 crusing at 40 1500 rpm i'd recommend changing sender its like 20 bucks but it sucks to change i hade about 2 feet worth of extentions and universals on to be able to turn a ratchet but it worked i almost think having the sender where it is will show you bad pressure with out tons of flow from the pump just because its so far away (back of the intake) stupid GM engineers plus your oil pump is prob a little worn does the motor make any noises when idleing ticking tapping or any of that good stuff? plus maybe try a standartd oil straight 30 or straight 40 see if that makes a difference. personally im not a fan of multi weight oils they never seem to work for me
