93 LT1 (crap) please help save my sanity

OK, so im a anything but chevy fan once you roll past the 70's however I still have the unluckiness of having to deal with this problematic camaro 1993, z28, lt1 yada yada yada... The car had about 125K on motor and chassis, was worked over by the original owner to push approx 400 at the wheels. Cars great minus a bad paint job AND the motor!!!

Ive been through just about everything with this car, opti crap is GONE! new tps, new plugs, wires, basically the works without swapping engines. My 1st main problem is im going through starters like no other..Ive replaced more starters in this car in 1 year than i have in ALL of my vehicles since i started driving 14 years ago. I have a real hard and rough turn over almost as if the motors broken off a mount. The bellhouse casing on the starter keeps getting SHATTERED...YES SHATTERED... 1st time i felt like a real dope because i chose not to shim the starter...OK forked over the money for the shop to do the next 1 cause that xhaust made me say some really bad things...told the shop about not shimming it so they did...1 month later i was back in the shop with ANOTHER busted housing. 3 of those in the last year and 2 others that the soleniods were shot before i even got the thing installed.

The 2nd and EVEN more frustrating problem is this, the car has a rough and intermittant idle once it warms up. It has absolutely no problems taking off and going fast, it just WILL NOT idle without dieing or cruise at slower speeds nice and smooth...anything under45-50 and you can tell she wants to die. Ive replaced SO much crap in this thing, been through 3 diffferent chevy dealers AND 2 private shops... NO ONE can find or fic the problem. It has no response problems...she'll get sideways anytime, just wont idle for crap without dieing....PLEASE< PLEASE<PLLLLEEEAAASSEEE someone here tell me you can help...any and all tips/info invited and appreciated... If this car continues what shes doing it will be seeing camaro heaven within the next 6 weeks... cannot afford to replace everything..might as well go buy a new car

Thanks in advance

Not enough info to really say on the idle problem but the starter problem sounds like a ign timing problem. The same as if you run to much timing in a car with a conventional dist it will buck the starter and can cause some major damage. The timing is not adjustable in that engine so you have to look at things that are inputs to the computer that it uses to set the timing. Possible crank sensor, cam sensor or ecm problem. Try to find out what the prev owner did to the car does it have a aftermarket prom or program? I would check on some of the 3rd or 4th gen sites those guys will have more experiance with this kind of thing than I would. Good luck.

sounds like a timing issue to me for sure. Take the ecu out and send it to someone and have it tuned. also, find out if its chipped, ive heard of chips causing HAVOC on cars if not installed properly. If youve done all the ignition stuff and it still idles rough and dies, check fuel rails, fuel filter, possibly fuel pump. It could also be the fact that the motor is to built for the stock ECU and or fuel system. Take it to a good shop. They should be able to figure that much out. good luck... And dont let this car go.. these cars are AMAZING,,you just really learn how much patience you have

Re: 93 LT1 (crap) please help save my sanity

I believe that 93's used a chip into the computer rather than a flash programme like 94's and up.

That said the dealer can easily verify the issue. I agree that timing sounds like the issue at startup. 93's were batch fired rather than sequential fuel injected. Could even have a complete 180 degree misfire in fuel and it would run... but not well at low idle. As rpm climbs the batch fire becomes less of an issue as the fuel is being dumped into the engine so rapidly that it burns up. Not so at idle and startup.

Back to basics... recheck the harness to the injectors and make sure it is correct not reversed. Find a original ecm for the car and try it in or have the dealer check it.
Good luck.
