MAF sensor??

Had a little situation happen to me at lunch. Just want to make sure i'm right about this before i unplug this faulty maf sensor of mine. here's the run down....

I have had my maf sensor unplugged for about 2 weeks now, cause when the car gets warm, the engine cuts in and out. With the sensor unplugged it doesn't cut out at all. only drinks a little more gas. I have a new maf sensor that i am putting in saturday. now for weird situation....
i was on lunch today. turned my car on, it started fine, put it in drive and gave a little gas and it stalled on me.... I started it back up, put it in drive and gave it gas and it kept stalling. Realized i was low on gas, but wasn't low enough for the gas light to come on yet.... So I plugged my faulty Maf back in and it car ran fine. got me to the gas station. My question is Does having the maf unplugged cause the gas light not to work, or is it just drinking so much gas because its unplugged that i was too close to empty??

Re: MAF sensor??

Try this! Dirt build up on the sensing elements inside the sensor can cause all kinds of running problems. The simple fact that you unplugged it and the car uses more than normal gas is a good indication that there is your problem. Try this simple test! With the MAF plugged in and the car running use a screw driver and slightly tap the sensor. If the car stumbles or hesitates chances are it's bad. If the car runs normally and does not hesitate when you tap it then try cleaning the inside elements with contact cleaner. You can get this at any auto parts store. Are there any codes or check engine lights on?
