Engine/Transmission Swap

Hey, I just recently purchased a 95 Camaro and, being the 18 year old that I am, i would like to swap the 3.4L V-6 in it for something with a little more oomph. I considered just supercharging the engine that is in it but I would like to switch the transmission out for a manual. I was told that the V-6 in it was 4 spd auto only? some help would be great, perhaps a GM crate engine? I'm really not sure. please help, thanks!

Re: Engine/Transmission Swap

Forgot swapping a v8 in there unless you have a ton of time and money or you have a z28 parts car, the cost will be huge. To swap in a v8, you'll need the engine craddle, the engine, radiator, springs, wiring harness, computer, instrument cluster in dash, fuel lines, fuel pump, new tranny the accessories, z28 ac compressor, belts hoses etc. The folks that have done the swaps say its the little thing kill you and the cost really add up. The 4l60 4 spd auto won't work on a v8 either as the bellhousing bolt patterns are different. Again if you decide to put a 5spd in there, that tranny will not work with the v8 either. Since your car is an auto, I'd just keep it. Its a stronger tranny than the 5spd. I don't think it would be worth the trouble to swap the 3.4 for the 3.8 v6, but that would be a cheaper install and you would be starting off with a 200hp v6 opposed to a 160hp. .

First thing to do for a little more go would be to install a set of 3.42 gears and posi if you don't have it already. Add some headers, highflow cat, and cat back exhaust. Add a cold air intake as well.

Re: Engine/Transmission Swap

the cost isn't huge. I did mine in my 93 for 6000k but that was with a t65 ls7 clutch, tune, 2002 ls1, cam, springs and all miscellaneous.

Its worth it to find a wrecked ls1 at a junkyard. I found multiple drivelines for 3000-4000 including computer and harness if you want a manual it will be a little more.

You will need an ls1 k-member with motor mounts and steering rack and a 98 corvette filter/regulator and a little wiring work and radiator hoses and thats it.

If going to lt1 you will need an lt1 k-member which i have btw and a steering rack which i also have.

Tune will have to be modified to disable vats. Not hard to do. I mean its really what you want man. I would say ls1. Definitely for 5k you could have a quicker ls1 with more potential than you would dumping it into a v6.
