High idle

Hello everybody!

Since a couple of days my 1993 Camaro (V6) makes some trouble. The idle speed of the engine is at about 2000rpm! I checked the throttlebody for leaks or mechanical damage but it seems ok. I also unplugged the TPS and IAC but the idle speed stays at 2000rpm (even if the engine is driven warm, but then it sometimes sinks to 1500rpm).

Does anyone know what part could cause this weird error?

Re: High idle

I'd scan it or have it scanned for codes. It may be limp-home mode.

Re: High idle

Limp mode is when an input sensor goes faulty, the PCM will go into a mode to keep the engine running regardless of fault, a last 'hurrah' so to speak.

Re: High idle

OK, I see.
Well I just tried something totally different. I disconnected the battery for some minutes to allow the ECM to reset completely. Now it seems to have a normal idle speed but sometimes the engine speed falls to under 500rpm when braking and shifting down, which makes the engine shake a bit...

Re: High idle

It may take a few drives for the ECM to relearn engine operating parameters.

Re: High idle

Thanks all for the advice.
Now the engine runs fine again. Here is what I did:

1. remove the IAC, cleaned it and checked if it is stuck
2. remove the TPS, checked if it is stuck, and if wiring is OK
3. disconnect the battery for several minutes to reset the ECM
4. Did a couple of drives until the engine got hot (15mins), then restarted it

That did the trick! Hopefully the error won't come back
