Drilled out fuel pump

I bought a 1997 convertible a month ago. I kept smelling gas so I took it to a local mechanic. They discovered the previous owner drilled out the trunk and inserted a new fuel pump that way.it stinks really bad when I fill up. You can lift the carpet and see where he just laid the metal back over. Any suggestions on stopping it?

Re: Drilled out fuel pump

Pretty common on fourth gens because it takes less than an hour to change out the pump that way rather than draining the tank, removing the exhaust, etc etc. You can get a piece of thin gauge sheet metal, cut it slightly oversize for the cutout with tin snips, and RTV it down over the hole.

However, if you're smelling fumes really bad it's likely they didn't install the sending unit seal o-ring correctly or lubricate it. Still need to seal the access door down though. Also there's an evap canister under the quarter panel that can emit fumes if the car's been overfilled a lot and gotten gas in it.
