Monsoon Speakers

Are there any replacement front speakers for a 99 Vert Monsoon system. I can't seem to find anything with 2 OHM. Any recommendations on replacing the system without breaking the bank?

Re: Monsoon Speakers

There are these but rather expensive:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XT6PPI?keywords=automotive%20speaker%202%20ohm&qid=1452434252&ref_=sr_1_1&s=car&sr=1-1
I used Rockford 4-ohm and turned the FADER to 3/4 equalizing volume.
But, you will have to solder an extension to the tweeter to OE harness as there are four wires for each speaker, not just two.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

Kee Audio has two packages for the convertible. They have good reviews on the LS1 forums. I've only installed the rear "increased bass" speakers and wasn't exactly impressed though. You can look them up on Amazon but I think Kee has a better price.
http://www.keeaudio.com/fbodyspeakers.html

The fronts in the package are 6.5" 2 ohm and the rear are 6.25" 4 ohm shallow mount. Maybe that's why I wasn't thrilled with the rears but you don't get much from back there to begin with.

Like Everett said I think the fronts are four wire since the amp has a built in crossover and outputs highs and lows separate. The rear is two wire though, jut mids.

One 2 ohm speaker I've been VERY pleased with is the Infinity Reference that I put in my Cherokee with the stock Infinity amplified system. I have the SI shallows in the doors and the CF regulars in the rear sound bar. The shallows might go in the rear of the Camaro but they are a little deeper than the Kee ones, the CF models are not as deep as the Kee door ones so they should work in the doors.....
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...ce-6032si.html
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...ce-6032cf.html

I say the SI might fit in the rear even though it's a 6.5 because the CF's which are a 6.5 fit directly in the doors of my Cherokee even though stock was a 5.25".

If you went with something like that, for the fronts I would remove the little crossover capacitor from the speaker and hook the "high" Monsoon lines to the terminals, then remove the new speaker's woofer wires from the terminals and connect them to the "low" Monsoon wires.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

Add on.....I think i'm wrong about the rears only having two wires. They might be four as well so if you don't use a coax speaker but a regular midbass like the Kee unit you only connect the "low" wires. One of their kits has a coax rear, the "enhanced bass" one just has a midbass driver I think to move the soundstage to the front more.

The main problem with the rears is interference with the top. Have seen threads where people use a spacer ring to put standard 6.5" speakers in the rears.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

Thanks guys for the info. I ordered some JBL's from Sonic. I have the infinities and am not satisfied, so we will see how the JBL's do.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

Which models did you pick? Did you get the slim mount JBL's for the rear that are $100 or so a pair? Be sure and post up your results.

I've had both a T-top and vert with the Monsoon system. The difference due to the convertible limitations....or what GM decided to do with it....is huge. There's just nowhere to put anything and retain space.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

Replaced the Infinity 6032si speakers with the JBL GTO628 and there was no difference. These front speakers are both made by Harmon Kardon. They have terrible distoration with no base. Maybe I am connecting them wrong. 2 wires to each terminal. Any suggestions . . . .I am stumped and have 2 sets of new speakers!

Re: Monsoon Speakers

There should be four wires in each door as you essentially have a pair of speakers in each door, a woofer and a tweeter. The factory amp has a built in crossover to send the low frequencies to the woofer on one pair of wires, and the high frequencies to the tweeter on the other pair of wires. On the new speaker, the crossover assembly needs to be removed from the speakers if you have them and the woofer/tweeter separated electrically. That will give you a pair of terminals for the woofer and a pair of wires (red/black) for the tweeters. Your new speakers are set up for a single full-range signal to be connected and the crossover on the speaker filters the low frequencies out so only the higher ones go to the tweeter so they have to be modified.

Left side:
Dark blue, woofer + (to speaker + terminal)
Light blue, woofer - (to speaker - terminal)
Black, tweeter + (to speaker red wire)
Yellow, tweeter - (to speaker black wire)

Right side:
Orange, woofer + (to speaker + terminal)
Dark green, woofer - (to speaker - terminal)
Light green, tweeter + (to speaker red wire)
Purple, tweeter - (to speaker black wire)

If your speaker looks like the pic below, you are going to have to remove the crossover assembly from it (capacitor and inductor). You can just clip the red and black wires that are coming from the magnet area. Those are + and - for your tweeter, connect the appropriate pair directly to them, red + and black -.

Then clip the wires going from the crossover assembly to the terminals and remove it. This should just leave the bare braided wires soldered to the bottom of the terminals. Those go to the woofer. Connect the appropriate wires to the terminals.

You say two wires to two terminals....it sounds like you took the four wires and combined two on each terminal? If so that will typically damage an amplifier.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

Got it and the Infinities sound great as do the JBL, which I will sent back to Sonic. This the wife's car and she is thrilled that she has her tunes back.

Re: Monsoon Speakers

That's great. The Infinities sound great in my Cherokee as well which made it a headscratcher to hear you didn't like them in your Camaro. My Jeep uses a separate tweeter in the door as well, but it has the crossover inline so it's just a two wire output from the factory amp and doesn't require modding the speaker like the Monsoon setup.
