68 Z28 project value

I know it is difficult to value something without seeing it. I have a 68 Z28 that I bought 5 years ago, a project. I know the history behind the car since 1970. The original engine is gone. Someone local seems to know the whereabouts of the engine, but no show. When I bought the car it had been in a barn 5 miles from my house for 33 years. Put there in 1981. The car had new GM quarters installed and then parked. It is a very solid car. Car was complete when I purchased it. The body is on a rotisserie. I did replace the trunk pan and the passenger side rear floor section. Pretty much only rust on the car. It does have the original Muncie and rear end. 4:11 12 bolt. Both completely rebuilt. I have a 69 DZ block, all machine work complete. Winters intake with holley carb. Told original, but not exactly sure. It would not take a lot of prep to get the body ready for paint. I have a new Dynacorn subframe. The original was damaged at one time, and I did not trust it being straight. I will be 70 this summer and have lost interest in finishing the project. Just wondering what a solid car with history would be worth? Thanks in advance.

Re: 68 Z28 project value

Without pictures and detailed parts list with correct numbers for the Z28 itís not possible to put a value on it.

NOM motor takes some away.

Interior condition?

Ballpark maybe $20k imho

Re: 68 Z28 project value

That is a tough one. What colors and options? I agree with the 20K ballpark with info posted. I own 2 and see prices all over the board.

Re: 68 Z28 project value

It is really hard to guess without pictures. However, if you have documentation that it truly is a z/28 car and everything is there you are looking at good money. The 69 DZ block is worth quite a bit of money by itself probably $1-2K maybe more to the right person. However, putting the 69 DZ block into a 68 car isn't going to increase the value of the 68 in my opinion. The only thing that will is the original motor. I see generic (non SS/RS/Z-28) 1st gen cars go for $13-$16K on regular basis. This is a car with no motor, no drivetrain and no interior. Literally a body on wheels.
As a package deal I would think that your car would get somewhere around $20K for everything, but the person that wants to take on this project it is trying to get it for $15K. So I would guess somewhere in the middle around $18K. Pictures and detailed parts/option list would definitely help give a more accurate estimate. Be prepared for all of tire kickers hanging around your garage giving you low ball offers, before you get someone who knows what they are looking at and having cash in hand. I hope this helps your decision. Best of luck!

Re: 68 Z28 project value

Thanks 3forme for the quick response. The car originally was Ash Gold with Black interior. I actually like the color. Not a big option car. Pretty much a base Z28. No console. Does have the factory spoiler. I have most of the front suspension parts, body mounts, some chrome, a factory cowl hood, rally wheels (1970 15X7 from Monte Carlo) to name a few of the new stuff that goes with the car.

Re: 68 Z28 project value

Thanks for all the replies. The only documentation I have are from the owners of the car since 1970. It is a real Z28. Granted, the engine is missing, but supposedly a local knows something about the 302, but is quiet about it. I have lots of pictures of the car before I took it apart showing the parts of the car that add to being a real deal. It has the born with M-21 Muncie and 12 bolt 4:11 rear end with the car. Numbers matching. Trans and rearend are both completely rebuilt. I am going to try to post some pictures that I took tonight of the car as it sits today. Again, a very solid car. I am just trying to get a feel for what it is worth before I get real serious and list it for sale. I just found out that a guy I worked with for over 24 years, owned the car in high school. I am going to see if he is interested. Another documentation as to the originality of the car.

Re: 68 Z28 project value

Without the original engine itís hard to PROVE it was a Z28. What a guy said about what who knows when is not proof. Unless you have other docs. Bill of sale, protecto plate kind of stuff

Re: 68 Z28 project value

M21 was only available in Z/28 and the big blocks. Just sayin'....

Yeah, documentation of some sort would sure help. Did you happen to get photographs prior to restoration ? Things like stripe paint in the cowl area, glove box sticker, etc...

Re: 68 Z28 project value

One of mine has the complete original drivetrain with no funny business stampings. I listed it for a very short time and I have learned everyone wants the original sales receipt with the salesman's name and social security number and first born!
On yours Banjo, the degree to which it is torn apart is going to bring the price down IMO. Shipping being a huge hassle.

Re: 68 Z28 project value

Last year I bought a 69 X-44 in the same situation as yours. NOM everything, with a rebuilt 69 350, Muncie 4 SPD and 3:55 12 bolt. Boxes of parts. Paid $15k, took 8k more to finish in 14 months, virtually a new SS clone . . . . sold for 40K.

Re: 68 Z28 project value

Roger, Vince brought up a good point about shipping. If you could get the underbelly
done and back to roller condition I think it would be very helpful. Looks like you're
not too far from that point. If not you may want to sell the rotisserie with the car.

I think I would work that "local" about the engine. With that you may be looking 30k.

I thought about that also. The belly is ready for a good coat of epoxy primer and paint. I have a new subframe, so would have to prep that and paint and assemble. I do have all new front suspension parts for assembly. The rotisserie is my friends, but he is my age too and is not going to be doing any more cars! I haven't asked him, but he may be ready to sell that anyway. He built it before you could actually buy them. He had a 57 Chevy and then a 64 Dodge on it.

The local guy that said he had the engine is actually the brother to the guy I know that bought the car in 1970, with original engine, from a Chevy dealer in Moline, Ill. I am not giving up on finding out if the brother actually has the engine. This is a straight up family with credibility, if that matters. He just kind of clammed up when I asked him about it. He knows I am serious and able to pay a reasonable amount if he really has it. I would really like to have it, even if it is junk.
