Son of a MOPAR nut, I'd be in deep **** if anyone found out im here......

Born and Raised with a MOPAR nut for a Dad, saw an endless string of Chargers/Darts/Challengers/Coronets ETC in the garage over the years, but i always had a thing for first Gen Camaro coupe's.

Well, I'm finally old enough to start my own project, and its gonna be a first Gen camaro coupe!

So, I'm here to get started, wondering what exactly I should be looking for / looking out for. here is some information that might help you guys help me....

I'm looking for a Car that already drives, and has a nice straight rust free body (for the most part).

I plan on shoe-horning in a big block, so the project can come with whatever it currently has (small block, Big block, v6, hamster on a wheel, whatever)

I'm not planning on going "original" so numbers matching and what not isnt too much of a concern for me.

So basically thats an overview of why im here and what im looking for, again this is just the idealistic view of a 23 year old with a dream, so feel free to set me straight wherever i may need it.

thanks guys,
looking foward to learning here!

I feel a great disturbance in the FORCE..........The dark side has lost another in the search of performance. Its like a Billion intakes cried out at once, and then quiet........The force is strong in this one, could there be another? All BS aside George, you found the right place. These guys are on top of their game, and will not steer you wrong. Your car hobby should give you lifetime skills, and should be rewarding, so if you can take good advice, your gold. PS, Welcome, Mike.

Wow, congrats on looking for a first gen Camaro. How is it that you can leave the Mopar so easy? I know, when I was younger, in my teens, I liked the Duster for some reason. But moved from a big city to a smaller city and didn't get to be around it as much. And in the 80 and 90s the Camaro grew on me. I had 3 or 4 Camaro's not at one time. I had 89, 95 and a 1998. Now I have a have a 1st gen, 1968 and taking the time to enjoy it, and restoring it.

A lot of guys get really hung up on what name is on the valve covers, but if you are a mechanic it really should make no difference.

For me, i guess it has to do with being easier to work with. When i was looking at Mopars, i felt like if i wasnt doing everything exactly to factory spec, i was wasting my time and money, cause lord knows the MOPAR boys will have your head if the stitching in the carpet is .0008 inch too wide or the headliner dosent smell correct. LOL

The camaro seemed like a better platform for me to start on, easier to work with, you can shovel any engine you please into the damn thing. they have a strong customization following, and they just look damn sexy too.

Now for some questions i have for you guys.

I'm looking for a first gen coupe, and i want to stuff a big block into that bad boy.
Where should i look for the car?
and where should i look for the crate engine?
I'm located in Southern California, but i dont mind looking anywhere you guys suggest.
thanks!

Welcome to Team Camaro from a fellow So. Cal member. Try looking in the Classifieds section here on TC. There are several first gen Camaros to choose from. Another thing you can do is, place an ad in the wanted section also here on TC. There are also other Classic car sites that you search for a first gen Camaro as well. Here are a few links to help you out...
