Greetings from the UK.

Hi guys,

Just been doing some research on one of my next project cars - a 69 Camaro - and found this site, so thought I'd sign up say hello and bring some love from across the pond !! Beats just lurking anyways lol

I hope to find out the best ways to fulfill another of my automotive desires and will be posting in the Pro-Tour section in just a moment, I have several cars, spend stupid amounts on them, fantasize about how to make them "better" and generally have petrol instead of blood, although fortuntaely have a very understanding fiance who understands just what a numpty I am without leaving me, which is a bonus !!! I may upset a few peeps here when I say mainly I am very well known over here in the UK for my Japanese cars and the things I have done with them, and I compete in the European Drift Championship, so Im afraid a "ricer" has crept into your midsts but dont hold that against me, Im really an OK guy.

Anyhoo - thats enough gushing from me as this aint the oscars, so Im off to ask lots of newbie questions and be generally annoying

James , welcome from the midwest. Speaking of petrol how much is a gallon or pint or however you chaps buy it there. I saw $ 3.49 USD this afternoon.

Thanks for the welcome,

Its usually around £1.10-£1.15 per litre, so that would be just over $10/gallon !!! Its slightly more than that for diesel, which I use for my daily cars and for my staff. Then theres 97-100RON "Super" unleadeds like Shell V-Power which I use in the drift car and a couple of the other fun cars which is more like £1.20-£1.30 if you fill up at a motorway services, so circa $11.70/gallon !!

I wouldnt mind but we tend to pay double for cars over here too in the first place !!

Yep - something like that !!

Its gone through the roof the last couple of years, it used to be 80p/litre about 2 years ago which is more like $7/gallon.

To give you a modern comparison my daily driver is a new BMW 535d M-Sport

Cost new with options was $100k
Tax is $430/year
Insurance is $2000/year
30k miles a year costs $10,000 in fuel as our traffic means it rarely gets above 30mpg
Servicing is about $2000/year
Tyres would be $4000/year as I hoon about when not stuck in traffic and run flats dont last long !!

Makes you wonder why you bother !!!

Hi David,

Whats a Cam 2 ??

I am hoping to actually sell one of my other cars (something I dont do as often as I should !!) to help fund this project, I hope progress will happen by the autumn, unless I get all impatient and buy a completed car !! Hence why Im doing my research now so if something good pops up I can just buy it. Hopefully the whole thing will be around £40k once here in the UK.

Welcome frorm the Beach! It's good to read of other world residents contemplating a First Gen Camaro.

Cam 2 is a racing fuel sold here in the States and at most international racetracks, Silverstone?

I would assume tyres would last more than a year?
Insurance & tax are a given, unless your deduction is the maximum limit. Multiple car discount? Added discount for home insurance through the same ins company?

Happy to hear that you are about to get into the Amer. muscle arena...remember there are two other years of first gen Camaros!

Welcome James, from another Jim here on this side of the pond. Having a Japanese car isnt fatal at all. My wife drives a Maxima, my daughters both have Altimas. Buddy owns the Nissan shop in town and his mechanic is a die hard Chev guy that helps with my repairs when my camaro needs to get lifted up high
Come often, stay late, last one out turn off the shop lights.

Welcome Bladerider. I have seen a couple of 69's around the London area in the last couple years. I really get the japanese car thing for you all living there. In fact I think that a 69 camaro may be a little too big to navigate a lot of the older carriage ways. LOL

another thing ,
after driving all those japanese cars then lighting up a Camaro with all that V8 torque.
That could be dangerous if you're not used to it.

Cheers fellas,

I want to learn what the exact detail differences are between the 67, 68 and 69 as I realise that often people say "A 1969 Camaro" almost as a catch all for the first generation, and I guess Im as guilty as anyone. Sometimes I see a Camaro thats a 69 and think Im not sure about its looks and other times I see a 67 and think WOW !!! I have much to learn but thats the beauty of the internet, sites like these with guys willing to help you out and generally true car nuts the world over from my experience.

Speaking of my experience I have owned a few fun cars, but my current line up is like this......

Merc Vito van for towing the race car and for work stuff when theres lots of bits to move. Bought new in 2001 so its getting on a bit now with 215000miles but the aircon, electrics and all the toys still work so its not bad for an oldie !!

Mazda 6 estate for one of my engineers to use for work - boringest car ever !!!

Golf GT Tdi 150 for my other half (who has recently sold her Mitsubishi Evo) as daily driver about to have KW varient 3 coilovers, VW Sport design kit, some sounds (out the evo) and my 19" rims left from my old Audi Allroad.

BMW 535d M-Sport touring for my daily work needs, soon to be DMS remapped to 340bhp and 500+ lb/ft will also be getting some 20" split rims next month for that pimping style !! Other than that its got everything you could imagine so its definately my the best car overall I have ever owned.

1967 Land Rover Series 2a with V8 conversion and rebuilt for offroad use with Pro-comp shocks, custom exhaust, props, parabolics, new dash, recaros, LPG conversion and chunky tyres on MJLee rims.

Infiniti Q45 which is basically a donor car for "Project MENTAL" for its all alloy 4.5 V8

Nissan Stagea - a Skyline estate basically - which will be getting the rebuilt V8 from above along with much special attention, full cage, 4 carbon buckets, airjacks and a pair of GT35r turbos to hopefully see us the naughty side of 1300fwhp. This car will be the only one of its kind in the world and should make a bit of a splash over in Japan if we can do it in time for TAS 2009. Im hoping it will be the fastest estate in the world and maybe a couple of other World Records.

Porsche GT3 comfort Mk1. It does exactly what it says on the tin, its fast, its goes round tracks like you wouldnt believe for a standard car and its for sale as its not fast enough for me and is too much money tied up in something I hardly ever use. Shame as one day it will probably be worth a fair bit more than what Im selling it for.............yours for $85k Oh and even this ended up getting modified a touch with BBS split rims, Toyo888 tyres and I almost went through with the Manthey racing 3.9litre conversion with KW suspension, later 6pots and a host of other bits which is when sense prevailed and I thought I'd turn my attention to the first of what is hopefully a couple of Muscle cars modded just the way I want.

And of course my bright orange (getting sprayed flouro orange next week) Nissan 180sx drift car. It used to be just about the best drift car in europe when it first came over and was a genuine touge car used by a young mechanic in Japan. Since then Ive fully forged the internals with HKS and Tomei, fitted one of only a couple of HKS Step3 headsystems in the UK which allows us to rev to 9600rpm+ and changed pretty much every other component on the car (wiper motors are still original ) Its running 480fwhp and 450lb/ft and last year I finished 7th in the European Drift Championship the highest level series outside Japan and the US. I guess the car would do low 111 maybe high 10 second quarters if i fancied it as it only weighs 1103kg's with full fuel etc and we are taking about another 75kg out of it at the moment. Its also having some 6pot radial brakes on 330mm AP discs fitted and larger rear setup to suit so I can also enter the odd round of sprint racing here in the UK as its all fully adjustable for setup.

Oh and I got a slightly modified 1998 Honda Fireblade a they were my first bike I bought so thought I'd get another to remind me of my earlier years (Im feeling old as its my 34th birthday soon )

Too many toys, not enough money or time to enjoy 'em and now Im already planning the next project despite not having finsihed the current ones !!!

I guess I have issues !!!

You wouldn't be any relation to Jay Leno, James? That's quite a stable of mares that you have there...your garage must be quite the hut?

Of all your herd, aside from your Porsche, I'd love to take that Rover out in the wilds... that's when they used to make the real thing.. and with that V-8 conversion, she'd be fun to drive.

Do you pop the bonnet, and crank the occasional spanner? Or are you lucky enough to have the pros handle the work.

Check out the archives if you get a chance and there are several informative sites that may answer a lot of your questions regarding the differences between the early gens...ie. camarosource.ca... camaro.ca and camaro research group (crg)..just to mention a few.

So sorry to hear that the petrol is so high in your neck of the woods...
