hello another newbee

My wife and I are looking to buy an 88 305 IROC Z, I am an old chevy guy I have rebuilt an 87 Monte SS I like and built a couple SBC power OLDER jeeps. We decided to get something sporty so 3rd gen Camaro went to the top of the list. The one we are looking at has T-Tops auto 140,000 miles in very overall good condition. Any help on what I should be looking for? I am also an old non computer Qjet guy and know nothing of TPI. Is this a reliable and easy to work on system? My kids say it is time I got out of the dark ages. Thanks for any input Old Timer

Welcome to the TC Crew, Jim. I've also heard some call that era the "Golden Ages"... 50's up to the 80's, so don't fret it none, eh?

The T's do have their inherent T leakage probs... other than that... look for the rust in the usual places, and the rockers.

Re: hello another newbee

As Ted suggests, T-top leakage is a pain. Rather expensive to replace weatherstripping.
I don't know if your '87 MCSS had T-tops, my '88 MCSS does and I'm having a hard time convincing the wife to spend $250 for w/stripping.

TPI is not a bad thing, I had an '85 Z/28 w/Corvette 350 under the TPI and wished I had never gotten rid of it. But at any rate, I replaced the injectors, EGR valve w/temperature sensor, since I was already there, and it ran great. It does poop out at about 4600-4800 RPM because of the short runners, but in all, it did good.

One of the tricks others have done is to drill a 4 inch hole in the pass fenderwell just above the frame member to reach in and change #8 spark plug. I got mine from above, tight compartment, but alittle easier from the bottom. I made three-layer 2X12 wood ramps to drive on to crawl underneath and it works very well. Drawer pulls to handle the ramps.

My Monte was a notch back my friends have Monte's with T-tops and none of them have stop the leeking for long even when they spent the long dollar for the GM seals. I have been told you can seal up the Camaro tops if you are patient and spend the time on the little details. Thanks for the info Jim

Have also heard that some even go so far as to seal them up...permanently!
