New here and a little bit of a greenhorn.

Hey all,
I am in Northern CA and I have inherited my first '69 Camaro. I can't wait to get under the hood and start playing! She is in really good shape, minimal rust and the engine is clean. Not original, but clean. I think it is a 350 small block. She runs a bit rich and I have a million questions. It has been 12 years since I have been under the hood of any car. I can't wait to get started! I am now a single mom of three and time will be a bit limited in time, but I want to be the one under the hood, not someone else. This was my late husbands car and I want to learn as much about it as possible. She sat for a year and I just fired her up on Sunday. Should I change the oil? Should I add an octane boost to the fuel? Thanks in advance for the tips!
Cheers,
Fergy

Re: New here and a little bit of a greenhorn.

hey welcome to TC, sounds like a great camaro. I really like the fact that you are planning on keeping this car going, since it was your husband's in the past. Yes an oil change is cheap and will give you peace of mind that it's ready for a summer of driving. As far as fuel, just drive it for awhile with premium and see how it runs...

I just bought a '69 last fall, for my son and I to work on, we have it on the road and it's been a lot of fun!

Got any photos of your car?

Just a little patients and good friends!! Thanks everyone!
Hey, is it common to have to have the car in reverse to get the key out of the ignition? Why reverse over neutral?

Re: New here and a little bit of a greenhorn.

Greetings from Arizona
nice ride...oil change, check all fluids, air up 5 tires, enjoy.
key into reverse to remove key must mean you have a stick transmission of some sort. car in reverse won't move even sitting on a hill. leave it in any other gear it could roll. always use parking brake

The 69 reverse lockout linkage was set up this way. On a manual trans car, when you put the car in reverse, it activates the linkage rods that attached to the lower steering column and turn the collar. This collar turns and allows you to turn the ignition off and pull out the key. Makes you place the car in gear so it cant roll. Kind of a safety feature. Just like putting an auto trans in park.

The clutch also has to be depressed to start the car.
