New guy here... with questions!

My name is Dave and I live in California. I've been looking for a first generation Camaro for a while now. I found a '68 6 cyl. 4 speed driver that's for sale but I have a few concerns. Any help someone could give would be appreciated.
How difficult is it to covert from a 6 to a V8 ?
The Cowl Plate looks new and is screwed on where the original should be. Is this a major issue?
Thanks for the help!

Hi Dave. Post pics of the tag in the Tag Team forum, and ask your questions there. Converting to a 8 Cyl, is not much trouble or hassle. Lots of folks have done it and theres a few threads explaining hwat you need to do.

Re: New guy here... with questions!

As John pointed out... not a big deal to make that mod. Lots of info in archives.

As far as the "cowl plate"... if you're indicating the vin tag...there should be NO screws... just orig rivets. If this is the case... walk!

Re: New guy here... with questions!

Welcome to the Club, Dave, and glad to see you're looking at the correct year...........

Somewhere, in Engine forum, I wrote the conversion needed for a 6 to V8 and you'll need a set of frame stands. Use a box end wrench with the box end taped up to not drop the nuts into the subframe. Just take and search using my name in posts and it will come up.

As said, pretty simple. Take a picture of the trim tag and post here for the experts to decipher, especially the screws verses rivets.

Enjoy your new chapter, pictures?

Cool Re: New guy here... with questions!

Now why would you want to haul out that 6 for an 8?

If you get the trim tag issue sorted out & buy the car, have some fun with it!!

Re: New guy here... with questions!

If the VIN Tag is SCREWED on, I would be hestitate to purchase this Camaro, but if you don't know you can take off the slotted piece, where the windshield wipers go thru, and look on the passenger side, and there is a partial VIN number there, that you can compare with the VIN on the Tag................Good Luck and be cautious.......................
Also if you are looking for a 1st Generation Camaro Project, I know where several are in Two different locations here in NV, contact me if you would like their contact information

Would hate to see you put a bunch of money and work into the Camaro you are describing, then go to DMV and run into major problems, live and learn.................
