Hello from Laos

Hi Everyone,
My name is Leng and I am the proud owner of the only 68 Camaro in Laos. Actually, it's the only first generation Camaro that is in running condition in the country.
I imported the Camaro in the beginning of 2012. Just in time before the government made a ban on all used car imports.
My Camaro is a Base coupe 327, 4-speed.
I'm hoping the people here will point me in the right direction as I try to build my Camaro into something with a little more power.

Here are a couple of pictures.

Welcome, Leng! Nice looking car. I'm sure it stands out in Laos. Nice English, too. Better than some of us natives.

Experience...... It's what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Welcome! That's a great looking '68, congratulations. What's the availability of parts like there?

Re: Hello from Laos

Glad to be here and happy to connect with people back in the States. I actually grew up in California. Spent most of my life in Los Angeles, before coming to Laos in 2000. Met the lady and have started a happy family ever since.

There's no such thing as trying to find parts here. That's the main reason why I bought the Camaro. I have a couple of projects here in Laos that have been quite a challenge. I've been restoring a 69 Cougar for the last 3 years and I have no idea when I'll ever complete it. When you think you're almost to the finish line, there's always something else that comes up that needs to ordered from the States - more delays. Another issue is that there are no shops that specialize in restorations. I'm lucky that there's a Canadian mechanic here that has a wealth of knowledge. He's the only guy that is willing to do the job right.

Tell me about it...... the Camaro gets more looks than an orange Lamborghini. The other day, while I was slowly driving past a long line of people waiting to get through immigration from Thailand to Laos, I saw about 3 people pull out their camera phones.

Re: Hello from Laos

Welcome to the TC Crew.

To have the only type of car like that in the country and the best year at that...what a deal, eh? Just hope that Canuck mechanic doesn't leave! Get lots of manuals.

What's the issue on "used cars not allowed into the country"?

Re: Hello from Laos

It's a shame that they don't allow used cars into the country. I would really love to own a couple more of these classics. The government's reasoning is that the ban will help alleviate road congestion and rid the road of unsafe vehicles. I think it's BS. I think there's a lot of lobbying from some major car names wanting people to buy only new cars and inevitably forcing the poor into debt.
