I'll need all your help!

Hello,
Just joined and currently live in SC. This past weekend I traveled 2000 miles roundtrip to purchase a very nice tribute car to Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins Grumpy's Toy IV. This car is based on the 1968 Camaro SS he ran in the NHRA class of Super Stock "C" (SS/C). It's a nice driver and brings back a lot of memories. This is the first race car that I ever saw as a youngster. I grew up in Malvern, PA and the original car was on a trailer at a Sunoco station in Berwyn, PA. I was only 13 years old at the time and could not believe this was the same car I had seen in the Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines. That is all it took to hook me for life. At 15 I bought my first car, a 1957 Chevy. I grew up and hung out with Jake Barbato, who became Bill's Shop Manager at Jenkins Competition; Joe Lepone, who I went to school with and shared a garage where we raced a 1958 Corvette, a 1969 Nova and finally a SBC Vega and who drove Pro Stock for Bill in the 80s; and Steve Johns a team member on a Modified Production Eliminator Vega that was campaigned in the late 70s. Steve went onto Jenkins Competition as Engine Builder and was Comp Eliminator World Champ in 1994 and 1995. He is currently Head Engine Builder for Victor Cagnazzi Racing near Charlotte, NC. I left PA in 1980 and went to work in the Automotive Supplier and Manufacturing world but got sick of the politics and changed careers in 2007. I helped start 3 car clubs in the upstate of SC and western NC and attend many regional, national and local car events.
I will need all y'alls help in upgrading this tribute car, but more on that later.

Welcome Ed to Team Camaro from down the road in Greenwood. Looking forward to seeing pictures and maybe even the car in person. Keep an eye on Steiner, next thing you know he'll be driving your car.

Re: I'll need all your help!

Wow, thanks to everyone. I'll post some pics for y'all to check it out as soon as I figure out how to! According to Doug Boyce's book the '68 Camaro was Grump's favorite. There is a YouTube vid of him being interviewed in York where he stated he made an $8000 investment and that car earned him $250K in 3 years. And from what I can tell he raced it in SS/C, SS/D, B/G, XS and finally Pro Stock winning the first race of that class in Pomona in 1970. He switched fenders, grills, hoods and ran a bunch of motors in the car. My goal is to get an accurate as possible SS/C Tribute car but I have few pictures to go on of the car in that class which I believe he ran in late '67 or early '68.

Welcome to the forum Ed, and good luck with your project. Those SS/C and SS/D '68 Camaros have a very strong appeal .

No side marker lights either. So is it a 67 or a 68 ? Is the VIN on the dash or the door pillar ? What year does the paperwork you got with it say it is ? Grumps 68 also was an RS (or at least had an RS grille). How accurate are you trying to make it ? So far the only real tribute to the Grump I'm seeing is some period correct decals stuck on a White car of an unknown year. Nice but you have a long way to go. Other than the 68 doors it actually looks more like the 67 car to me.
