New here

Hey guys, new here. I am going to be trying to get my mother in laws '68 RS running (and keep in my garage!) It hasn't run in about a year - she got tired of messing with it. It used to crank and run just fine. She did say it starting running hot. Any advice on what to do before cranking her up? I was planning on replacing battery, gas and oil and flushing cooling system. A friend mentioned pulling spark plugs and dripping Marvel Mo oil. Any help appreciated.

Wink Re: New here

I would pull the plugs, but would do a 'dry' compression test before squirt ing any MMM in it - and then I'd repeat to get the 'wet' numbers ...
This may help point out any obvious issues, like a bad head gasket (low reading between adjacent cylinders) that could cause overheating.
It will also give you good read on the engines mechanical condition.

Make sure you have a new/well charged battery and that the throttle, and choke, is fully open while cranking for each reading.

Next would be to change the oil and filter and but at least 5 gallons of new fresh fuel in it before trying to fire up.

If it fires, I'd have a new set of plugs and other tune up items to install in it before trying to take it on any extended test drives.

Good luck.

If a man says something in the garage - and his wife can't hear him - is he still wrong !!!

Welcome to TC...68 RS Nice

A can of starting fluid may also help "get running", but fresh gas will be needed as stated above.

I would check the plugs for signs of a bad head gasket as well before the compression test.

It could be anything from a plugged radiator to a stuck T-stat or even a head gasket.

Good luck, and keep us posted.........

Re: New here

Welcome to team camaro!
Check all the fluids and fire her up.
Monitor all systems and be prepared for malfuntions and address as needed.
Watch your coolant temp as shes warms up.
Might have a bad t.stat or head gasket mentioned above..
One step at a time!
