hi i'm Cory im new here

i live in north eastern wisconsin. i have a 68 RS convertible. it has a 327 and a 4 speed. std blue interior with "L" teal (dark blue in my opinion). the car was my dads since 1973. he passed away little more then a year ago, so i got the camaro now! i can not afford a restoration, its been sitting for almost 30 years! im going to get it back on the road in memory of my dad, and have a good time doing it! this site hopefully can help me with a cowl tag question i have. point me in the right place to ask the question. thanks

Welcome to TC
Glad to see another 68 on the site

As for the resto....take your time, do it right....nothing worse than rushing through it, just to re-do again.

Re: hi i'm Cory im new here

Cory - Welcome to Team Camaro. Great way to remember your Father by getting his car back on the road. There is a lot you can do once you make her road worthy again before committing to a full and proper restoration. There is a similar process all parked vehicles go through to get back on the road. I just went through it myself after my 69 was parked for 20 something years. Had only expected it to be one winter. Its a process but it will teach you everything you need to know about her.

In the nut shell you have to evaluate, repair, replace and or service each major system of the car.
  • Electrical - Including Battery, Voltage Regulator and Alternator and wiring harnesses.
  • Cooling - Hoses and radiator and heater core condition. Flush and fill.
  • Brakes - Pads, drums, rotors, lines, booster, valves and master cylinder all need to be checked as they are steel and rust can be deadly. The fluid sould be changed if contaminated.
  • Drive-train - Engine, transmission and or clutch, drive-shaft and rear end all need to be inspected, fluids checked. Several oil changes may be needed to get the sludge out.
  • Fuel System - If the tank was left full it needs to be siphoned out and the lines flushed, sender checked, fuel pump checked, carburetor cleaned and rebuilt most likely.
We would need more info on how she was stored and current conditions before pinpointing your checklist but these are just points to start with you may find some systems are like new, others need complete replacement.

This is the best Camaro Community on the web so you are in good hands.

As to photos, if you become a full paying member you can up-load your pictures direct to the sight and they show as thumbnail pictures that auto enlarge when hovered. Lifetime gold is cheap and a one time purchase.

If you remain a non paying member you have to host your pictures on some other website and then use the img & /img tags in your postings to add pictures from that off site picture store. Not that I see any of the money but the gold membership was the best $59.95 bucks I ever spent.

Let us know what we can do to help you evaluate your restart of the RS.

Brian

Re: hi i'm Cory im new here

Well we have all seen worse so you are ahead of the game. Have any pics of the engine and drive train conditions? Body doesn't look too bad in those two pics. Top is beat but any decent shop can put a top on. I take it the 69 Cowl Induction hood resting against the garage is hers?

Since it was your Dad's are you plans to bring her back to his modifications or make her your own?

Re: hi i'm Cory im new here

the hood is from this car. it was the stock flat that my dad bondo'd the cowl scoop on way back in the mid 70s. from sitting for so many years its beyond repair. the body from a restoration stand point is in very good shape. as i stated above i cant restore the car. it would be more then i can spend right now. so im going to get it in working order and be safe to drive. i did the same thing to the nova in the back drop of the photos, and i have had a lot of fun with that car. as for the mods that dad did, some i am going to keep and some i will add my touches. i am going to put the motor back how he had it, a very old school 70s build.
