chevrolet 302

Hi folks, I'm new to this kind of technology, so bear with me, I have an original chevy 302 engine installed in a 57 chevy truck (stepside). I was wondering if it would be a good idea to take it out and sell it separately and if so what price range should I be looking at. The engine was in the truck when I bought it, but didn't know what it was until my mechanic went through it. He matched the numbers to a chevy 302. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian.

Re: chevrolet 302

Hey Brian please post in the orphans section here and at CRG if it is a real MO or DZ block. If it is the real deal, there may be a first gen Z/28 owner looking for their block.

Re: chevrolet 302

What numbers did he use to come to this decision? Many of the block castings were used on various sizes of motor, not strictly the 302. Not doubting your mechanic but it would be nice to know what numbers he used.

I have owned 3 69 Z/28s: Garnet Red 30,000 mi unrestored.
Glacier Blue, documented Canadian Z

^ Good point. I was recently offered an engine described as a 302. Went to look at it, and it was a 2-bolt truck block. The guy said his mechanic determined it was a 302 "because it was a 3970010 block".

Re: chevrolet 302

The real identifier is the stamped code on the passenger side deck in front of the cylinder head.
Take a picture of it the best you can and post here.
As Mike suggests, Post #2, the last two characters of the code, ie, VXXXXMO or DZ, will be the key.
The other numbers within the code are month and day.
The other stamping of numbers are the partial VIN of the vehicle the engine was origianlly installed from the General.

However, if the block has been decked earlier in its life, these numbers will be gone and now a mute point.

Re: chevrolet 302

Brian, look here to find where the codes are: http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml Post a picture of the stamp like others have said and we'll go from there. Hopefully it is a real 302, but don't get your hopes up just yet.

Re: chevrolet 302

Thanks for all the information. The number my mechanic came up with is 3914678 the other #appears to be I8N383787. Does this make any sense?

Re: chevrolet 302

3914678 is the casting number. That block was used for 302s, 327s, and 350s since they all have the same 4" bore. There should be another code that looks something like V0413MO near where I8N383787 is stamped. That is the code that will tell you what engine it was originally built as. I8N383787 is a '68 Camaro at least.
