new gal 68 dream car

I have always wanted a 1st gen Camaro finally bought a 68 last year, my dream car turned into a nightmare. Everything from the motor to trans, brakes and wiring has gone wrong. But not giving up. We are slowly getting it there. I am still trying to research the car as best I can to find out what drive train it actually came with. We are thinking that it was a big block car by the position of the heater box hoses. I know the car was built 8/29/67 in Norwood then it was shipped to Memphis TN. We bought the car from a man in Mobile Al and he got it from a man in VA. Now I am going to try to start tracing the roots of my car. Wish me luck. Thank you for allowing me to join.

Thumbs up Re: new gal 68 dream car

Welcome to Team CAMARO

With a now near 50 year old vehicle you have to expect there are going to be problems, just the way of mechanical/electric thingys
But take the issues in oneseys-twoseys as they come and you can tackle just about any obstacle that comes your way.
As you come to each decision just evaluate it as to if it's good to go - for YOUR needs - with a rebuild/repair or if it is an item that would be best addressed by upgrading/changing to a more current technology ... barakes for instance often make more sense to upgrade in type (Drum to Disc) and size if needed to meet your needs in the future for drivability and performance.

Good luck with your project, we'll be here to give pointers, advise on choices or just listen to you vent as needed

Oh, you did pick the best year

Re: new gal 68 dream car

Congrats on the purchase. Sorry you have had a nightmare so far. Same here. Been wanting a 68 for some time now. Bought one hastily in August early september, soon as it got to my house everything broke down. Never drove the car. Been sitting in shops since then. Allegedly the car will be back in my possession this Monday. But as soon as it comes home, it goes back because I have other parts needing to be put on lol.

Wish you well in this endeavor. But I feel your pain. Trust me.

Thank you both, at first I was so disgusted I just wanted it to run good enough to sell but after I got past the initial depression and with my husband's encouragement I have come to accept the problems and go on to make this my true dream car. He has been very understanding and as I get upset when I have to spend more money he reminds me that this is a car to keep and the cost it not to be considered. So one step at a time I will tackle each problem and make it the dream car I always wanted.

Re: new gal 68 dream car

Welcome, Annette
Congrats on purchasing the correct year.
Plenty of help from here as suggested.
Patience is the key, don't let her overwhelm you.
My suggestion is start a logbook of the journey.
Include all info having been done before, during and after of every system/item worked on as to part numbers gotten,
present conditions, and pictures before deconstruction are nice reference material.
We humans do forget as we get older
It will be worth its weight in gold later in life.

I will warn you, somebody will ask you for pictures of her.
Both of you keep the faith and I believe it has started.
Beware of the Snowball Effect.

Give a man a rescued dog for the health of both their souls. May 2017 ROTM Winner - Thank you!

Re: new gal 68 dream car

Mine was a very pretty piece of excrement when I bought it too.

Do one thing at a time. Buy your hubby the books to repair it. Focus on making it safe first, look good next and fast last.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Thank you all. We finally have a lot of the bugs out and I even drive it to town today and back without it breaking down. It is a beautiful car and turns alot of heads. We still have a few more mechanical things to work out but we are taking it one thing at a time. My husband's has a 68 Chevelle so now that mine is safe to drive he can go back to working on his. I will be checking the forums for advice and tips as we go.

Welcome!

Yes, great year!

http://www.camaros.org/diffs68.shtml

Is any of the drivetrain (engine/transmission/rear axle) original to the car?

Using should work unless you have a photobucket account, then it's really easy.

Re: new gal 68 dream car

Cool car! I bought my 68 Friday in Memphis. I hope too see your car at some ms car shows. I've got a few things to fix on mine but it should be ready by the time the shows start back up. I'm going to try to post picks on profile if I can learn how to do it.
